Colibri V3 connections

I have a Colibri logger version 3. I haven't used it in several years
and I'd like to use it as a backup logger but have not been able to
get it to communicate with my PC.

The manual describes the connection as easy and automatic, however,
using the 9 pin D plug serial cable (no USB avail on this version)
using comm port 1 on the PC, the LX
utility only shows comm port 3. I tried to change this to 1 but
couldn't figure it out. The Colibri is connected to battery power and
is on. It would seem that the computer doesn't
recognize the logger. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It'd be
nice to not have to invest in a new logger.

Also, if anyone is familiar with the wiring of the Colibri, I have
used it simply as a backup to a 12v battery, splicing terminals to the
+ and - . The Colibri manual has the
wiring description and identifies the Rx (receive) and Tx (NMEA
output) wires that would be used to attach to a PDA connector. In my
case, a Compaq 1550. My question is: would
these two wires include the 5 volt power to the PDA? Or would I have
to also splice off the 12 power supply to power the PDA. I don't think
the 1550 could accept the 12v?
Any help with this would be appreciated also.

Hi Steve,

The Colibri can't provide 5V power for a PDA. All PDAs require 5V power.
You'll need an external power supply for powering the PDA. I sell the
Goddard PS-5a for that purpose. I also sell all the cables for connecting
the Colibri to the PS-5a and the PS-5a to the PDA.

Are you using a USB to serial converter, or does your PC have an actual
9-pin serial port? If you are using a USB to serial adapter, then make sure
you know what comm port it is using. You can find that by going to the
Control Panel > Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) while the USB adapter is
connected and working.

I imagine that the problem is a comm port issue. Or perhaps the USB to
serial adapter you are using is cheap and doesn't work. I've seen some very
poor USB to serial adapters. I sell and recommend the Keyspan USA-19HS
adapter.

simple and efficient way to do this is with the IMI power
converter.....pretty much a simple plug in for colibri, PDA or any other
connections with several cable options (I have al types here) please see my

If your PC has MS ActiveSynch running then that will probably interfere
with serial communications.

Run msconfig go to the "Startup" tab find an entry that looks something
like "wcecomm" and clear the check box.

Exit msconfig

Reboot

PC *should* talk to Colibri using the LXe utility (available from LX
Navigation if you didn't get it with your Colibri)

Colibri -> PC communications run at 19200 baud
