By sunday 4th, a special "competition" version of LK will be available for
download.
This version can be used in competitions.

Is this version going to be produced for each new LK8000 major and
minor release?

We only have a single official release, which is currently 3.0a .
Starting from 3.0a (and next 3.0b , not needed soon since no critical
problems found so far).

The beta versions under development (odd versions like 3.1) may be
distributed with the competition version as well, if needed.
But as you know, betas are not a good choice for a competition.

There will be no competition version for 2.2 or 2.0 . We dont support those
versions anymore in fact.
But since upgrading to 3.0 is possible also from 2.0, I see no problems.

Since next version 3.2 shall also have LiveTrack capability, that option
will be disabled in LK Competition as well.

We dont want any problem with upcoming competitions in europe. If the US RC
is accepting LK, also the other RC will follow.
It will not be possible to compile a fake version of LK with those options
enabled: for the simple reason that I am compiling the code with a C
compiler that I have .. compiled myself after a small change in it. The
resulting CRC will always be different, not to mention the executable size.

So all problems concerning the issue "it is open source, anybody can change
it" is solved. Anybody can change it, but the RC is accepting only the
official version delivered on official distribution channel, and this
version is unique because nobody else has the same compiler.

I am sure there are alternates approaches to solve this problem, but I went
for this one by now.

I assume the only change will be the executable itself, correct? Would
switching between contest and no contest version require only swapping
of executable or is there a need to touch other files as well?

Absolutely, 100% compatible. No need to change anything in configuration.

Let me add a side note, not concerning LK.
Time was not on our side in this game, because competitions are starting on
march 11th.
I hope xcsoar will not deny their users a competition version right now.
There is always time to reconsider and change things, but not at 10 days
from d-day.

I am very sure that new features and technology will progress far beyond the
little things we are asked to disable right now.

As we have stated elsewhere already: XCSoar versions prior to 6.3 don't have a working AH and as such are compliant with the US RC rules. There is no time pressure for us and whether we release 6.3 with a "competition version" or not will be decided when we release 6.3.

In addition I would not recommend to call it "competition version" because that might suggest that this version has additional competition-specific features. We are still looking for a proper name that expresses our opinion on this topic...

Paolo -

Thank you for putting this new version together! I hold many of the
same opinions, but I appreciate your efforts to help us in the US deal
with the issue as it (hopefully) works its way to some reasonable
resolution over the next year or two.

Take care,

I would call it "Restricted", "Basic", something that makes it clear
that this is not full build.

Maybe something like "FAI COMPLIANT", as it is not only a USA rule
that is being complied with.

Knowing a little bit about the XCSoar developers, I imagine that they are
searching for something a bit more "colorful" to "express [their] opinion
on this topic"...
