Hey group!
We are very excited to announce that a Sunlight readable Oudie will
become available shortly (mid April) and maybe even more significantly
that we went into considerable trouble and will be be able to upgrade
your old Oudie too!
Full news announcement is here:
http://www.naviter.si/content/view/148/1/lang,en/
We will be happy to discuss it here on r.a.s. as well.
Cheers,

Hi,
I'm very exited about this new sunlight-readable Oudie. The original
Oudie's were extremely popular for many reasons: great SeeYou Mobile
software pre-installed, airports and airspace and vector maps for most of
the world pre-installed, non-volatile memory (it doesn't lose its memory if
the battery gets low), large display in a small package, power/data cables
and cradle included, etc. The only complaint I ever heard about the
original Oudie was that we all wished it could be brighter. It was already
brighter than other color PDAs and PNAs. But now it is much, much brighter.
The price in the USA for the new units will be $600.
The great news is that all existing Oudies can be upgraded to the new
screen. The upgrade must be done in Slovenia. I will be accepting Oudies
here at my office for bulk shipments to Slovenia to reduce shipping costs.
The upgrade price is $240. I think that is quite reasonable considering you
will get a unit back that is easy to read in sunlight - with all the great
features of the original Oudie. Please don't send your Oudies to me yet
because upgrades won't be available until mid April.
I'll have details and photos on my web site later today. You can pre-order
the new Oudie now, here:

The Sunlight readable Oudie is avialable from Craggy Aero LLC the
leader in Sunlight Readable Technology with the Ultimate Le.
See for details:
http://www.craggyaero.com/oudie.htm
Many think that the sunlight readability of a display is primiarily
due to the brightness. Brightness is a factor in some displays but
the overriding factor is contrast ratio.
Contrast ratio is important in high and full sunlight applications.
Contrast ratio of a display is defined as the luminance (brightness)
ratio between a brighter state and a darker state. The color LCDs
“white” state and “black” state are used to calculate the contrast
ratio.
Contrast ratio = CR = luminance of the “white” /luminance of the
“black”.
If white and black are equally bright, then CR = 1 and the display is
not readable. High contrast ratios makes the view in direct sunlight
less dependent on the backlight intensity.

200 E + VAT + round trip shipping to Europe = $270 USD + $45 + $65 =
$380 USD and 4-6 weeks? Sound about right?
Innitially that seems rather expensive to me. The ones upgrading have
already spend $600 and will have nearly $1000 invested in the product
after the upgrade is completed. $1000.
Is the upgrade just the screen? Or are their other enhancements such
as processor, battery? How about an IGC approved logger? Maybe an
miniatureized espresso machine? :-)
I thank you for improving your product but the price of the upgrade is
approaching that of an iPad 2 (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/
shop_ipad/family/ipad)
The price of a new Sunlight readable Oudie is set at $600. Expensive
as the hardware, minus the screen upgrade, is likely very outdated.
In my opinion this upgrade price is so high that it is not worth it
for current owners.
I would like to offer my Oudie for sale at $400 USD. Included are all
the mounts, cases and charges (wall and car). I used it last season
in contests such as Uvalde, which was lots of sunny blue days, and it
worked fine! Contact me at if you are interested.
Thx.

Folks - putting my comments here as well -
I think Naviters announcement is good news for everyone - The Naviter
folks are good guys - they are using the same display as mine I
think. If you already have an Oudie, it can be a good way to go -
BUT
E200 is $260+ after conversion which is about the same price as my
entire unit- And you have to mail yours in, wait for them to turn it
around, mail it back etc. so your total cost is about the same as the
BriteNav - upgrading hte screens is a labor intensive job which
explains the cost of the upgrade.
With BriteNav you can load in whatever program you like to use.
(LK8000, XCSoar etc)
If you are not already a Seeyou user and only want to use Seeyou I
would suggest you support the Naviter guys -
If you want choice in your software, consider BriteNav - this was why
I liked it enough to make it available to folks..
You can still support Naviter with their SeeYou Mobile software in
either case.
Hope this helps - The value proposition for Britenav hasnt changed -
and Naviter have improved their Oudie with the same technology - an
embarrassment of options....

The price of a new sunlight readable Oudie is $600 (plus tax & shipping). Expensive when you consider that the hardware, minus the screen upgrade, is likely very outdated in comparison with the latest devices available.

You will need to tip your sunglasses up at times, or shade it with your hands to see it in very bright sunlight. I honestly rarely had any problem seeing the screen. My main wish is to take advantage of the large amount of very affordable available modern hardware. The Oudie is solid, works well and is a proven product.

Innitially that seems rather expensive. The existing Oudie owner has already spent $600 within the past couple years. We will have nearly $1000 total invested in the product after the upgrade is completed. $1000. Thats alot for a PDA!
Is the upgrade screen only? Or are there other enhancements such

The reason there is no need to ship the units is they will just
replace the units with the upgrade. The upgrade cost is the cost of
the new hardware. You transfer your software and it is all set.
Not a bad policy. This is new technology, it is not like a software
update. How many computer companies give you the same deal when they
come out with a new model?
That said you can buy one of Peter's BriteNavs and keep your old unit
as a backup for about the same cost.

Naviter went out of their way to enable a retrofit option for the new
screen. This is more than most companies do when they introduce new
hardware. They could have just introduced the Oudie II with the better
screen and a $600 price tag. So my hats off to Naviter for giving the
Oudie owners an upgrade path that makes sense.

First of all, I think at Naviter's there are good fellows, and the company
must carry on first.
This said, let me smile a bit, with no intention to offend you or naviter's
business..
You buy the software in 2010.
You buy the Oudie, and pay again for the same software, with a discount, in
2011.
You buy a new Oudie in 2012, keeping the same software.
In the end, in 3 years you have been buying twice the hardware and twice the
software, considering updates.
But you only have one unit in your hands now, nevertheless you are an happy
customer, because in your opinion they might have try to sell you the new
hardware, with the software, for the third time. John I think you are the
perfect Customer for any company! ;-)

Some of the folks got some of the things wrong. Let's get them right here:
1. There is no VAT for US customers or anyone outside EU, just us Europeans.. And then there's ways for those who are incorporated not to pay it. The end user pays. That's how the system works here. It's not all bad. Please talk to your local reseller about your end price. It will be in the 200-250 range more than anything.
2. The shipping will be your local shipping cost to the nearest dealer. Unless you decide to ship it express accross the ocean. Not something that we will recommending ;)
3. We will actually upgrade your device and send it back to you - upgraded. All of your files and settings will remain intact.
4. Peter and Paolo complain about the price but make a few good points along the way. We actually have a worldwide network of dealers. There must be one in your country or else we are interested in having one. But dealers are not freeware, they actually work to make things happen. They take a fair share of the upgrade and all other prices. And their reward is well deserved.. When you pay for an upgrade or whatever you are sure that the person who sold you that actually cares about what you bought and will help you all the way as you use the product.
I guess that's the essential difference between freeware and shareware. People sometimes forget that being able to choose is a good thing. Believe me - I grew up in a country where there was very little choice in anything. What we have now is much better. But by no means cheaper.

Absolutely, you are right. People have to pay for the Service, and you do
give them an excellent one.
That's out of any discussion Andrej.
I think this new oudie will make many people happy, and it is an excellent
move!

sunlight readability on my oudie was not an issue last season. don't
forsee it being an issue this summer either.

For me, sunlight readability is not so big a problem. But combine it
with reflections and it is. The screen diffuses reflections a lot. I
finally covered the dull silver plated chest catch of my parachute
with a black sleeve, and it is much better. Not sure a brighter screen
would help that. Boxwave protector doesn't help.

Some comments on prices:
The new Oudie is $600. Includes power supply, and SeeYouMobile.
A BrightNav (or similar V1) is $300. Add a power supply, it's $365, with XCSoar or LK8000. Smoking deal! But if you want SYM, then its another $239, so the price ends up being about the same as a new Oudie at $604.
A Dell Streak is around $350 on Ebay, less if you want to play bidding games with 12 year olds... Add a power supply, it's probably around $400 - and you are limited to XCSoar. Great if you like XCSoar. Not so great (for now, at least) if you prefer SYM or LK8000.
So we are talking about $200 difference here! (less if you already use SYM and get a discount, by the way...).
Now if you feel you need bragging rights on having the latest processor and OS in your cockpit, then your choice might be biased a bit.

I keep telling my friends asking for the software, that if they know how to
use at least 30% of CUm functions, keep using it!
Because most of functionalities in software are never used (think about a
wordprocessor). In flight, it is important the pilot know the sw,
and he has spent time to learn it .
So for 150$ I wouldnt suggest a friend to change software and mind, and the
Naviter offer is affordable and very reasonable all considered.
I have taken today some pictures of this new screen (ok I use V1, but it is
the same, and mine is also a prototype).
Well guys, night and day, night and day compared to old LCDs. Perfect in
the sun, just perfect in any light condition.
The pics from Naviter are not enough to describe the difference. Andrej make
some more, compared to other units!

I love my Oudie, as it is, it has been great and I'm sure it will be
even better when it is brighter. I love how easy it was to set up,
good to go right out of the box and I didn't need to be a computer
expert to make it go. Plus all the options that came in the box made
it easy to come up with the best installation that worked for me. On
top of that it has proven to be a stable platfrom. Such an
inprovement from the old PDA's.
I'm a huge fan of Naviter, they have been great for our sport. Keep up
the good work guys.

Hi Dan,
Good question. The new brighter Oudie will use more current than the
original version Oudie. I don't have specific current draw numbers yet.

Hi,
I have added a lot of new information on the new brighter Oudie to my web
site. They are already pre-selling very well. If you want one in April,
you may want to order soon. You can see details here:
http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/seeyou.htm#News
and
http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/seeyou.htm#Naviter-Oudie2
I have a few new, original version Oudies for sale for $495 (while supplies
last). If you buy one of these you will have something to fly with for the
start of the soaring season, and you can still get it upgraded with the
brighter screen over the winter (for about $240). Or buy one of these as a
backup unit.
http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/seeyou.htm#Naviter-Oudie
If you have a good, used Oudie and are considering upgrading to the new
brighter version, you may want to check out my offer to sell your used Oudie
for you. It will cost you less to buy a new brighter Oudie and have me sell
your existing Oudie for $395 than it would cost to get your Oudie upgraded.
Another advantage of this approach is that you won't need to be without your
Oudie during the soaring season as you would be if you sent the Oudie in for
upgrade in April. You can see details here:
http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/seeyou.htm#I_Can_Sell_Your_Used_Original_Version_O udie_For_You
I anticipate receiving some good used units from customers that I will be
selling for them for $395. They will be tested by me and have the latest
software installed. All accessories will be included. Those are great
prices for ready-to-fly, "Cumulus Soaring Tested" Oudie systems.

Hi,
I'm very exited about this new sunlight-readable Oudie.
You can pre-order
the new Oudie now, here:

become available shortly (mid April) and maybe even more significantly
that we went into considerable trouble and will be be able to upgrade

> what does the new screen do to the power draw
This is what we have measured at 12V and internal battery full:
Old Oudie: 250mA
New Oudie: 350mA
Add about 150-200 when the internal battery is charging.
We got exactly 24 hours out of an 8Ah 12V battery and we have a log to prove it.
The internal battery duration in comparison will be significantly reduced because of this change. With old display you could easily get 2-2.5 hours, with the new display at full brightness it will be more like 45 minutes to 1 hour. But. All Oudies that have ever been built have one feature that we never advertized. Until now. They have a light sensor and the abbility to automatically dim the screen if you are in a dark room (like the briefing hangar or a shade under the wing).
With the backlight fully dimmed the new display will last 2.5-3 hours but I must admit we have not tested this scenario properly. We'll do that and report back about how long the battery will last when fully dimmed.
Automatic brightness works great on an Oudie and can significantly reduce battery consumption. If you mount your Oudie so that the light sensor has clear view of the sky (which it does if you mount it on the canopy) we strongly recommend you to use the Automatic brightness feature.
We didn't advertize this feature just because there is no reason to dim the old screen ever :) but we were hopeful since the beginning that some day we will get a good screen for the Oudie. It added cost to each unit we sourced but now it wil prove priceless!
Cheers,
Andrej Kolar

Naviter has said the cost to update any Oudies purchased since January 1st
2012 would be done at just EU50 and older units would be EU200 for the
updated screen and any other updates...I will be able to help with getting
these updated if anyone is in the US and wants to have the update done
without having to send theirs back to the manufacturer they can just send
them to me here

Out of curiosity, how does the brightness of the new Oudie compare to
a Clearnav?
Hi,
Good question. It is my impression that "nits" measurements are a bit
approximate, so we won't know for certain until we have a new Oudie in hand.
However, the specifications for the new brighter Oudie say it is in the 900
nits range. The ClearNav specifications state that, "Nominal luminance is
700 Candelas/m^2 (nits), achieved with a single lamp that goes around 3
sides of the LCD. NK provides lamp overdrive capability up to 1100 nits for
severe ambient conditions such as flying into a hazy late afternoon sun."
It sounds to me like they will be quite similar. The ClearNav is great in
sunlight. So are the LX8000, LX8080 and LX9000. It sounds like the new
Oudie will be very similar.

Out of completeness of the thread I owe you the battery life with "Automatic brightness" setting turned on.
We were able to measure 2 hours and 21 minutes with the Automatic Brightness feature turned on under office conditions (where the backlight is more or less at its minimum brightness setting).
So pretty much what you can get out of your "dark" Oudie with brightness turned to the maximum level.

Hmm, so what do we learn?
- At full brightness, the old Oudie was usable at office conditions.
- The new Oudie consumes 350mA at office conditions.
- At the same brightness, the new Oudie wastes 100mA more than the old
Oudie.
(350mA vs 250mA according to your previous post).
- Nobody knows yet how much the new Oudie will consume at the
advertised maximum of 900 nits.
Anyway, why is it still the same lousy pixel resolution (even the
ancient hx4700 has more!), and why not transflective?
Max
You misunderstood the point of the last posts Max. I'm glad to give you the headlines once more:
.. New Oudie consumes 350 mA @ 12V at full brightness. That is when it is very much sunlight readable. It doesn't waste any, it consumes 100 mA more to deliver sunlight readability.
.. At minimum brightness the internal battery will last approx 2.5 hours which is plenty to enter the task at briefing or in the shade under your wing.
That's all.
> Anyway, why is it still the same lousy pixel resolution
Because we would never trade pixel resolution for brightness. Even the old Oudie is at least twice as useful as the HX inspite its inferior pixel resolution. What counts to us is what you can see under direct sunlight, not the GHz, MB and pixels in the specs.
> why not transflective?
Because we have tested transflective screens and they did not perform better than the one that we have chosen in the end.

Andrej,
Thanks for your measured response to a set of arrogantly worded
questions. I admire your patience with Max...
