Hey, Jim, Photos work fine on Usegroups I don't know what you are
talking about!

Here is my AT-6 in the Grand Canyon. The government has made all of
this "No Fly" restricted airspace.

If you read your earthlink TOS, you will see that they only allow posting
of binaries in newsgroups that have the words binarie(s)in them. And
CERTAINLY not a non- "alt." group.

Many (not most, but many) news-servers will automatically screen them
out.

I know it's hard to find, but somewhere there is a FAQ for all the
rec.aviation.* groups, that expressly forbid binary posting.

doesn't show up here on my news feed - should be posted to a binaries group where we all can get them if we want to see
them...

The non-existant plane needs no photo!

Even I, a non-builder, got his one.

Gary,

The plane did exist. Yes, you did get it too.

God, I was hoping THAT error would slip by.

Originally, when I couldn't see any photo at all, I thought BWB was making a
comment regarding no flights allowed anymore. Thus the foolish comment
about 'non-existant' plane. In an unpleasantly short time, it was clear I
completely misread the intent of BWB's post. Sorry BWB!

Really unpleasant fact is, that wasn't the only dumb post I made that day.
Sometimes it's better to just say in bed. Reduces potential for mistakes.

Of course if you make mistakes when you are alone in bed it might be best to
wash the sheets as quickly as possible.

No worries Gary. In fact you can see me standing on the wing of that
AT-6 in the Rogue's Gallery.

Most of the boasting here is bull ****. So, I would assume you are
used to exposing the liars. I would assume an AT-6 or an A-26 was all
bull **** unless I knew the guy, knew the missions and knew his
history.

We used those A-26's at EPA for remote sensing. I only rode in them a
few times but they were fun. O'ring got a good long X-country in them
once that he'll never forget. The problem with all the government
flying is that it's all MISERABLE. If you don't have a miserable
mission to perform then you work for a miserable asshole. We worked
for Chet Drop. He was one of many thousands who made it to an O-6
(Bird Colonel) and never got a star. So, they booted his ass out of
the Air Force at 30 years. Chet came to EPA and ran the EPA airforce.
That was all the Huey's, the two B-26's we had, the T-34, the Mohawk,
OV-10, and the two Vopar (Beech-18 turbine conversion) radiation cloud
trackers we had.

My job was to avoid Chet, number one. I wore a head band in those
days, with a black widow spider embroidered in it. I had long hair as
you can see from that shot of me in the AT-6 in Grand Canyon. Me, in
the same room with Chet, just breathing the same air be breathed
****ed him off, yet I was the only one there with an ATP. That griped
his ass.

Most of the thousands of hours we flew were absolute misery. My main
job was to fly the Beech-18 in support of all nuclear tests at the
Nevada Test Site. We would have to orbit a dry lake bed up there
about 50 miles south of area-51 and wait for the underground
detonation to occur. After the collapse phase I had to fly in low and
sniff the crater for radioactivity. There was almost never anything
to detect. That was boring in itself. But, the most boring thing was
the fact that we had to orbit at 10,000 msl for hour upon hour upon
hour. In a flight suit, helmet and a pressure breathing oxygen mask
on, in the summer it was 100 degrees in that cockpit. The Nomex suits
absorbed sun light and made us hotter. Everyone in back was always
asleep and the PIC was usually grumpy because he was an old man and he
was miserable too. I was a kid and simply building time. I'd do most
of the flying.

How I orbited the dry lake bed was to put the autopilot on with
altitude hold, set the fuel flow to about 220 pounds per hour on each
side and then simply keep my hand on the autopilot turn knob. I
didn't even need to do that a lot of the time. I'd set up a one
degree per second turn and just let it go. The predominant winds
were always out of the west, so we'd drift toward the Air Force Base's
airspace and Dreamland (the test site's equivalent to ATC) would call
me as I got close to the bombing and gunnery range airspace. I'd wake
up and take on a westerly heading for a few minutes to reposition us
over the west end of the test site. Then I'd space out again for
about 15 minutes until we drifted across the test site and approached
the AFB's airspace once more. This dance went on all day long except
when we'd have to RTB for fuel. Actually we'd land at Indian Springs
AFB and tank, then back in the air, back to 10,000 feet, back to
hypoxia, heat and misery.

I did it for years. But, I did build enough time for my ATP that way.
I'm so happy I never have to do that again I could just spit. I'm
particularly happy I'll never have to see Chet Drop, Colonel of the
EPA airforce ever again. I heard that the old ******* died actually.
I don't know how true that is, but I don't care either. He was never
nice to me.

I'm sure most of you other old government pilots have a lot of stories
about the self centered assholes who were always in charge. No matter
what the mission, the government seemed to always hold an election to
instate the biggest prick they could find to be the project officer.
I rotated out to the field and back for three years flying those Hueys
on floats that you see on the Rogue's Gallery. We had three of them
plus the "Leapin' Goose," that old piece of **** single engine Otter
on Amphib floats.

The flying was a ball, but they picked the biggest prick on Earth to
run that operation too. Everybody hated that guy. I sometimes wonder
why he never got fragged. In combat, he would have. I hated
government flying so much that you old time RAHians have seen that I
don't write about it much. It just brings back memories of misery.
None of the aircraft even had airworthiness certificates. They were
dangerous as hell. They were Public-Category aircraft. You could
drill holes all over them, mismatch wings, it didn't matter. I don't
think any of it was even close to being safe. But that was the job.

Thanks for the insites. Admittedly, my knowledge of your experiences is
poor. It's always great to find someone who can add the personal touch to
what most of us can only read about in books.

I still think it is proper for me to apologize for the stupid assumpions.

Thanks
