Hello community,

if you would have to choose, which pilot (or aviation related) magazine
would you choose? Flying? Plane & Pilot? Prite Pilot? Or any other? Or do
you think subscribing to a mag is completely nonsense?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Right.

2nd choice, Pilot Getaways http://www.pilotgetaways.com/
Unfortunately, the OP's location being in Germany may not make that
magazine as desirable unless he flies in the US.

Not Flying. Too much big money influence. They've lost touch with us little
guys. And watch out for their
subscription marketing. I'll get deals direct from them for low price
subscriptions .. then
I'll get solicitations disguised an invoice from another place for about
three times the
normal cost. So they're selling their subscriber list to these low lifes.

AOPA is the best as far as I'm concerned. Plane and Pilot isn't too bad. IFR
... IFR Refresher
and Aviation Safety are good .. but pretty pricey.

I used to subscribe to Flying. I noticed over the course of several years that the content of Flying and AOPA Pilot was very similar month to month. I dropped the subscription to Flying some time ago.

If you're me, though, you apparently don't actually have to subscribe to anything. They just show up anyway. A while back, I started receiving Flying again even though I hadn't asked for it. When my "subscription" ended and I didn't renew it, I figured that would be the end of it. I guess not. Now Plane & Pilot keeps showing up every month.

I'm getting less interested in the magazines, as I keep reading the
same safety stories over and over (really? weight and balance *is*
important?), together with news and information that I already read
online two months ago.

Among the ones you listed, though, I prefer Plane & Pilot -- it's
specifically aimed at our small piston planes, so more of the content
is relevant than in general pubs like FLYING.

I wish AvWeb were still good.

All the best,

www.theflyinglife.com is a brand new magazine on the shelf.

Kai,

what country? Since you seem to be in Germany, Aerokurier and
Fliegermagazin seem to be logical choices. Personally, I find both hard
to bear - the writing is REALLY bad, and the editorial content clearly
influenced by the advertising. But that's just me.

FWIW:

- AOPA Pilot - since you should be a member anyway. It's a good
magazine, too.

- Aviation Consumer - if you want info on products, services and such,
it's the best. Not for neat stories, though.

- Pilot Getaways - if you like going places and need some help with
that.

- Flying - not because it's good, but because it's so cheap that it's a
no-brainer. 10 $ per year or so. It's still sometimes hard to bear...

Not to mention Pilot & Flugzeug ,-)

There is reason for posting this to RAP and not to a de.* group.

If ya have only ONE magazine to read, I would pick AOPA Flight Training
Magazine. Great content and it's more than 'just for primary students'. In
fact I see my CFI checking it out all the time. I look forward to each
issue as I almost always find some 'gold' to mine from each monthly
magazine.

I let my subscription on this one go. They tend to just recycle the same old
stuff in my opinion. I haven't found it overly useful. I kept the other Belvoir
mags: Aviation Safety and IFR.

I subscribe to all of them, but I'll second the motion for "The Flying
Life" -- and not just cuz they've published my articles. :-)

These folks are genuinely aiming at OUR market -- the little guys, flying
Spam Cans, looking for neat places to visit. Best thing is, you won't get
articles written by billionaire doctors flying jet-prop Cheyennes on "tough"
cross-country flights...

They've got a tough row to hoe ahead of them -- it's not exactly a stellar
time to be starting a new flying magazine. I urge you check them out.

When I began training, I subscribed to AOPA Pilot, Flying, and Private
Pilot. I didn't renew Private Pilot, and I dropped Flying after the
second year. Now AOPA Pilot is the only magazine that comes in the
mail, and I confess I don't read even that from cover to cover.

Not that it really fits into this group, but Experimental Aircraft
Association (EAA) has several different publications. Most of the
information revolves around systems and theories but as a GA pilot in
airplanes, it sure done me a lot of good. Of course now I will be buying a
kit to build and airplane for myself.

I get 3 or 4 but the only one where I drop what I'm doing and read it
immediately from cover to cover is IFR.

I receive AOPA, Pro Pilot, and ALPA's AirLine Pilot , their
magazines are provided with each. The latter two you cannot purchase,
they are free if you're in the business.

Have a great one!

Actually both of them will sell you a subscription if you don't qualify for the
free one ($32 for Airline Pilot, $50 for Professional Pilot). ALPA actually
seems to put up most of the magazine content on their website so you can
read it for free.

Same here. But are you like me, aiming directly for the back cover?

Well in my opinion, AOPA Pilot is the best magazine among the US ones. I
don't like Flying, aimed at business turbo prop pilots with editors
telling the stories of their own flights, unable to make any
investigation. When it is Barry Schiff doing it, (like in AOPA PIlot)
there is much to learn and it is worth reading, but when it is a plain
young captain, it is often disappointing. It seems to me that many US
magazines suffer from this : to many articles based only on
uninteresting facts related to the editor himself.
But since you live in Europe, you might consider trying british
magazines. More articles of general interest in them. Among them, in my
opinion, Flyer is not good and very superficial. Today's Pilot seems
better, but it is difficult to find in France and I haven't read it very
often. My first choice would be "Pilot". However, the magazine has
changed a lot in the last few monthes, with several editors
disappearing, I don't know why. It may not be as good as it used to be.
The advantage of british magazines versus US ones for you will be that
they will deal with regulations which directly affect you : JAR FCL.

Thanks for all the answers,

after all it seems that the AOPA publications should do it.
