CNN is reporting that coroners discovered cocaine and alcohol in the system
of the pilot who spun his aircraft into a LA apartment complex last spring.
As you might recall, the crash was captured on video tape and resulted in
the deaths of all on board and one on the ground.

Wow, that is really stupid. I won't even ride my motorcycle if I've
had more than 2 drinks (plus several hours AND a full meal). Why
would someone actually try and fly like that??

The cocaine probably gave him a false sense of sobriety.

Be that as it may.

I've seen a large number of pilots fly with a heavy load of booze
through the years.

To the best of my knowledge none were ever in an accident (or a
fatality).

Can't say it couldn't happen, but was not a 100% accident waiting to
happen.

I remember onetime I was giving an evaluation to a full Colonel in a
single pilot fighter. We took off in formation with me on his wing
into a thunderstorm and climbed through it to on top. Lots of
turbulence, lighting, etc and he was as steady as a rock (maybe just
froze on the controls <G>. He was a WWII jock that was in the Guard.

I do agree though, booze and flying is not the best combination.
