Pilots make mistakes and die everywhere, but which places/demographics do better/worse than others?
I know that no one has any across the board hours_flown:fatalities metrics, but I wonder if anecdotes and impressions have some value.

typically areas with more activity have more accidents.

Tom Knauff has provided some very useful insights into this topic in his published articles in Soaring magazine.
Look the up and you will learn a good bit.

I think a better question is why some places have better safety
records.
One of the obvious positive factors are those groups who self-insure.
It provides a motive for everyone to watch out for the flying
practices of their fellow pilots.

At our club, the chief flight instructor and the #1 tow pilot are the guys with the place where the broken stuff will go. Needless to say, that is a strong incentive for trying to have safe operations.
