Maybe someone on this board can offer a solution.

The Pawnee I fly when towing has side tone so loud that it's ear splitting.
I have to wear ear plugs under the headset to protect against the pain
caused by the side tone volume. The radio is a Terra with gas discharge
display and flip-flop frequency selection and a David Clark headset. I've
removed the radio from the rack and turned the side tone adjustment down as
far as it will go and it's still painful without earplugs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW, the other towplane has an older model Terra and it has no side tone
whatsoever.

Take the radio in to a radio shop and have them check it on the bench.
It could be that the pot you are adjusting has failed? They should be
able to set it and test it to factory specs.
