I saw recently on the disovery channel that the 3rd safest group of drivers
by occupation are pilot. Just thought I'd share with you guys

So what you meant to write in your subject line are "commercially employed
pilots are safe drivers".

Yes, hence the word occupation in the paragraph.....
BTW, Housewife was first, dont remember second though
(housewife? career? since when?)

I think as a pilot safety gets drilled into you; not taking stupid chances,
thinking ahead, etc. I really noticed that I became a more careful driver
after I started taking flying lessons. It just kind of carries over.

I noticed that, too. After every lesson, my head was "on a swivel" for
the drive home.

Enhancing situational awareness is *always* a good thing. Especially
when you have four children all under the age of nine...

I pretty much always planned out trips (by car) calculated milage, made
ETA/ATA checks, etc. After taking flight lessons I had to REALLY fight
not to drive down the center line on the road after lessons :)

Discovery's statement is probably true in the general sense, but there
are black sheep in every herd. I know of a couple of very fine pilots
who are lucky every time they make it safely to the airport from their
home. It has always puzzled me that they could be so professional in
the air, yet reckless behind the wheel of a car.

That's what I was thinking. Some of the best pilots I have ever flown with are
clueless when it comes to driving a car.

¿¿Perhaps they haven't cancelled their IFR flight plans??

[The devil made me write that]

Can we get cheaper insurance rates then????

I was wondering? does the FAA ever look at our DMV records regularly?

My driving probably is unsafer around the aiport because I am looking
at the airplanes!

At least one insurance company does offer special rates for pilots. They don't
do business in the states with the goofiest insurance regulations of course.

Probably not much for private pilot types. The info. is available to it though.

The Criminal Aviaton Division of the Department of Transportation's
Inspector General's Office has looked at DMV records to arrest those who lie
about prior DUI convictions on Airman applications.

My experience with both pilots and drivers has been that those who *tell*
you how good they are, generally aren't.

Ha...that reminds me of when I first obtained my instrument ticket in 1990.
I was driving to Reno from the San Francisco Bay Area and as I drove up the
Sierras in I-80, I entered a cloud (is it fog at 4000 feet?) and vis dropped
to nothing. The first thing I did was focus on the instruments in the car. I
was like "Whoa..hey there...this ain't telling me squat!".

Don't feel bad...when the 55MPH speed limit was enacted back in the early
70's, there were several accidents due to people watching their
speedometer's so intently, they...ah, didn't watch where they were going.

Or using the gear shift for a throttle?

Trying to steer the car with my feet is what gets me in trouble.

Aren't commercial pilots safer drivers because they'll lose their
chance for a shot at the majors if they get too many or the wrong kind
of ticket? With the hiring/furlough situation as bad as it is, I've
heard a single speeding ticket can get you flushed. That'll keep you
driving like your license exam all the time. Any pros care to confirm
or deny?

No, but I have noticed that I tend to drive with only one hand on the weel
more than I used to.

There was one time I tried putting a bit of back pressure in
while on a curve on the highway.
