New Nexus 7 with xc soar.

Any thoughts? Will the screen hold up in sunlight? It has GPS,
accelerometer and a gyro. Is the 16 GB enough?

In sunlight, mine has about the same visibility as my Ipad. (faint
praise indeed) I haven't explored changing screen settings. In
general, I'm delighted with my Nexus7, but something with a
sunlight-readable screen might do better as a glider computer.

There is one great app called IXGYRO .. which is a good test for build in gyros , accel sensors and magmetic comp sensor .. along with the gps of course ...

Could you check if this app would work .. as I found to my dismay that it works ONLY on the better equipped tablets .. (unfortunately not my galaxy ") ...

This would strictly contribute to the XCSOAR stability on such device ..
As of sunlight readability ... custom build shade would do just fine, I have a perm one, some 3" deep enclosing tablet permanently set on the panel ..

Vaughn, you already have one? Wow. That answers my question whether Asus would deliver as they had troubles with the Transmformer Prime. The display brightness is ~400nits which is supposed to be decent for sunlight(same as my phone). Its not quite as bright as other more expensive Asus tablets which have a special mode that kicks it up to 600 or so, but should be a bit better than the iPAD. Perhaps a matte screen cover will help with reflections?

OK I downloaded the demo version of that on my Nexus7, and it looks
solid to me.

Also, I have an ap called "GPS status" that convinces me that the GPS in
the Nexus is more sensitive than my hand held aviation GPS. Sitting
inside my house, the Nexus7 is receiving 10 to 12 satellites

Well .. thanks for confirming ixGyro .. (and yes.. I also use GPS Satus and GPS Sensors apps..) ;-) ..
In such a case you can expect a perfect results using XCSOAR ...
Anyone want to buy Samsung Tab 7" tablet ? ;-) ..

Yes. I ordered mine straight off the Google Play site. It took about
two weeks for it to arrive. I bought it to hopefully replace the Ipad
that I fly (powered) with, which actually belongs to my wife.

You just need to put your map, turnpoint and airspace files in the XCSoar folder, which should be in /sdcard root. You may need to download and install a file manager prgram like ES File Explorer to move files around on your device. Or, hook up to your PC with a USB cable and use your PC to move the files around.

Had to load ES file explorer on the tablet because there was no file folder for XCSoar (when connected to computer via USB), but once loaded the folder appeared and i could just use the ES program on the tablet also. Looks like it works - try it in the air this weekend. Much thanks.

Yes, you're absolutely right. XCSoarDate is the complete name of the folder. And, as Max said, once files are all in there, you'll need to use the config->system setup->Site Files configuration screen to select those files into your configuration.

It has those sensors, but it doesn't have a barometer. The phone (Galaxy Nexus) has a barometer. I've tested it in the airplane (after inputting altimeter setting) and it's very accurate. I was disappointed that they left it out of the Nexus 7.

The primary reason for including barometers is to get a faster GPS fix. If the Nexus 7 GPS chipset acquires quickly, that might be why they left it out.

I am using the Nexus 7 with XCSoar and so far so good. I just need to get used to XCSoar since I am mainly a SeeYouMobile user.
The Nexus 7 works well and is not overheating unlike my PDA. We did alright making T30 with all the signoff timing corners.
The screen brightness is sufficient. With a matte screen cover it works just fine IMO.
The only thing I would like to do is lock the screen somehow since the display is so large I unintentionally touch it sometimes with where I have it positioned.

The 8G works fine although I plan to root it, load StickMount and use an OTG cable for an additional flash drive. But only really need that for watching movies. For XCSoar you dont need that.

Does anyone have some basic settings for XCSoar on the Nexus 7 for paragliding and can you explain to me how to set it up? I find the menu system so fiddly and difficult to navigate - it would be great if someone who has already set it up for PG pilots to share their wisdom.

I have XCSoar on a Nexus 7 talking to Condor over Bluetooth with terrain maps.
(I muddled through this and forgot half the steps, so I can't provide step by step directions.)

I was feeling pretty good about this progress, but then I got stuck.

Using a program I found on Condor user site, I converted Frank Paynter's demo Condor Flight plans .fpl to .tsk files (the ones from his cross-country Condor book), but the .tsk files do not load to XCSoar on the PC or Android version. I suspect that the conversion program did the wrong thing.

The tablet is damn fast and works very well with XCSoar. The terrain maps in the background have a quite good resolution and it just looks pretty good on such a high-res screen.

Unfortunately I haven't had enough sunlight yet to be able to comment on that. I suspect it to be somewhere between the two Oudie versions.

Haven't used it in flight yet, so I can't comment on this either. I usually use my devices in connection with a Flarm via IOIO though, so this won't be relevant for me.

Not sure what you mean? If you have any kind of internet connection on the tablet you can upload the IGC files pretty much anywhere you want. If you choose the version with the mobile data antenna, you can even use live tracking via SkyLines for example.

Thanks for that info. It sounds very good. What I meant by the Bluetooth question - I should probably have said download, not upload. I want to be able to extract igc files from an approved logger, which will be connected to a GliderGuider PNA. Would I be able to use Bluetooth to transfer files into the Nexus from the PNA?

Dan, can you tell us what setup you are using on the 302 side to make it accessible via Bluetooth? I'd be highly interested in avoiding the serial-to-usb device that is normally necessary to communicate with a 302, together with the cables involved.

I use a K6BT serial to bluetooth converter. Simply plug it into the serial
port of the 302 and select the K6BT driver in XCSoar with default baud rate.
You also have to pair the devices (just once) - on the Android, select
Bluetooth, scan, select the K6BT and enter the password which comes with the
converter. It was all simple and straight forward and works great.

Another pilot on the airport built a similar device from a kit. The K6BT
was not cheap, but it was worth it to me to get rid of the hassles of
carrying a laptop to get my igc file.
