Your posts on the WGC in Uvalde are greatly appreciated. Is it just
me, 'cause it appears there isn't much news posted on their website.
No videos; no active webcams. The tracking is good, though it seems
not up to par with available technology. How does the Concordia look?
Did Seaborn not have a start yesterday? I don't live too far away and
the temps were in the 100's; great thermal forecast.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Not just you Michael, I find the lack of info to be disappointing, to put it mildly. I guess Cochrane spoiled us in Szeged.

Maybe we should all chip in and sent Frank Paynter down there so we know what's going on... Enquiring minds (or what's left of them) want to know...

Good suggestion Jack, he's probably got the shakes from not having a contest to fly

Thank Paul - very nice pictures.

I agree with others the reporting leaves something to be desired. The best I've seen is from the Canadian Team's blog. Am I missing something?

So - what happened to John Seaborn yesterday?

Seaborn is listed as a "DNS" yesterday (Day 3), but there's nothing on
the US Team website that adds anything. IMHO, in a sport that's
struggling to maintain interest, we're missing a great opportunity to
market soaring with the WGC only coming here once in a blue moon (too
costly to ship equipment/teams). Give much credit to the WGC
organizers and directors for mobilizing this. However, maybe they
should have recruited a bigger, more aggressive, PR effort with SSA
assistance? The Spot tracking only includes a few gliders, perhaps
because of tactical issues for the pilots. Even a delayed, but more
expansive, tracking would boost spectator interest. Don't mean to be a
complainer. Cudos to all who are putting in their time/effort to make
a successful competition (and to DB for winning Day 2 in the new
Concordia)!

John Seaborn had an invalid start (DNS). "Start line missed by 1.28km"

make sure read all the lines on the 15 meter score sheet. It notes the situation with John's flight on Wednesday.

Yup, that's why I posted the details on his missed start point. Not
sure if he flew the whole day, with his flight being tossed after the
log was downloaded, but in the old days "good start" was radioed to
the pilot so he/she new to proceed on course. If "bad start" was
heard, they'd come back to try again. Is it accurate to say with the
dataloggers that contest pilots do not have this assurance and don't
know to come back and try again, or do the rules state you can't try a
restart?

Ron Gleason
August 9th 12, 06:46 PM
The assurance of a valid start is now done by the flight recorder and/or flight computer attached to it. Many options for visual and audio assurances and alarms.

Have not spoken with John but in reviewing the log one can infer he may have had the wrong start line programmed.

BTW, flight logs are available by clicking on the pilots contest number on the score sheet for any given day. Download the log, program in the task and fly his flight.

yes he did fly the complete task

Yes you can start as many times as you like, the last valid start is used for scoring.

Thanks for the info, Ron. They have now started today's tasks.
The track links have been published before. Looks to me like this
first one by Hawk has all the US pilots, while the Way link has no US
pilots today.

Not only flew it, but did darn well. Compare his flight with Suchanek
-- John was staying ahead through most of the task. (I think I can see
the point at the third turn where he figured out about the start!)
Heartbreak. Been there, done that, leaned the hard way to triple check
task, start point, radius vs. diameter, then get the crew to do the
same.
Though like the others here, I'm pretty starved for news and analysis.
Even the disasters are worth knowing about. (ZL's traces from day 1
and day 3 are sobering. Been there and done that too!) Good job to the
Canadian team for excellent blog posts and analysis. The belgian blog
is good too.

I would be all over the US TEam captain and/or crew(s) for specific information. While we some 'behind the curtain of scoring and management issues' our access to the pilots is limited.

John didn't know about his start problems until after the ice cream at supper. Too late to restart. He had a great flight except for that, and landed today with a big smile on his face. Of course it seems that he is always smiling.

I would chip in for that! Not to take anything away from the U.S. Team
bloggers, I certainly appreciate their writeups, but Frank should have

You do realize though that by Frank not being in Uvalde the organizers have
