You need a basic knowledge of aviation safety to understand why the video is compelling. Dont worry about it.

Yes, indeed. Lot's of people should have caught that before it
happened. I do note that some very young kids are assiting with the
launch instructions to the towpilots. Not saying that was a factor.
While a rudder-lock could prove very serious on tow, the Lark fatality
a couple months back might (underscore "might") have been complicated
when someone on the radio shouted "abort, abort, abort" when they
noticed the tail dolly hadn't been removed. Most if not all comments
in RAS stated the tail dolly was not a factor in moving the CG too far
aft, yet the pilot may have released (at 50 feet were some reports) w/
o knowing it was just the dolly.

It was incredible (after the fact) how many of us did not notice. I was in a crowd of 50 or so waiting for Concordia to go. I was filming the upcoming motor launch and when I took my eyes off the camera screen and focused on the glider directly. I new something was wrong but did not know what for a moment. A bit like looking at the "find the difference game" and trying to find the discrepancy. When i realized it was a cover on the tail and the glider adding power I could not believe it... very glad it was caught! Scary what might have happened if he began his role. PLEASE BE CAREFUL EVERYONE!

We had a similar issue years ago at our field, we decided to wait until the glider was at a "safe altitude" to let him know about the tail dolly.....since he was "flying" we decided to limit the distractions.....

Sean, well done. Sometimes we can be looking right at something and not see it. Checklists are there for a reason.
Walt.

Well, you can't wait when there is a cover on the horizontal. If Sean
hadn't noticed, the glider would have crashed. A very close call, since
the pilot was seconds away from advancing the throttle. Fortunately,
the pilot had good peripheral vision, so he saw Sean at the wingtip
waving his arms.

Sean, kuddos for saving the guy's life!

A beer or two or three. That would have been really ugly

Great job F2. No doubt a "perfect storm"...poor piloting, poor crewmanship, and poor line crew safety.
Another strong point is cover design. Perhaps manufacture should consider a color change or addition of tell-tales. Agreed absolutely absurd, but if this can happen at a WGC, it is even more likely to happen somewhere else.

RE: "I do note that some very young kids are assiting with the launch instructions to the towpilots."
No such thing. I was a launch volunteer member AND tow pilot at Uvalde. All the kids did was hook up and check the rope connection. Nothing more. Nothing said. In the end--regardless of where you are and who's launching you, the final fate rests with "Duties of the pilot-in-command: to assure safe condition of the aircraft prior to takeoff".

No excuse for this, but Uvalde presented extreme
challenges as crews were desperately trying to
keep as much dust off the planes as possible;
hence covers off at the last instant. Check
out some of the blowing dust in the videos.
Less likely to happen at more "normal" venues !

Amazing this could happen with so many pilots standing around.
Nice one Dave! What happened to the pilots last minute "Controls Free"
check?
Would the cover allow enough movement to allow this to feel normal?
