View Full Version : LVVSA Roach Dry Lake Fall Auto-Tow Extravaganza

Grider Pirate[_2_]
August 24th 12, 03:59 PM
The date has been set for the weekend of 27/28 October (weather
permitting) for the LVVSA Fall Auto-Tow event. The location is Roach
dry lake, off Interstate 15 just north of the California/Nevada
border. Directions can be found on the LVVSA.org website.
Auto and Aero tows, great food, lots of fun. We will have a rope
capable of towing the big two-place gliders (G103 and Janus C) this
year.

Are plain old 15/18 meter ships welcome?

Yes! Dan W from Northern Utah (NUTSO) brought his Ventus down last time. Took only two tows all weekend, and 'got away' on both.

We're planning to attend, then!

Would it be possible to get an Auto Tow Endorsement?

We camp on the lake bed. There are 3 hotels in Primm and 1 in Jean.
Camping out is part of the event.

Ground launch endorsements are possible. Club members first.

Excellent!
I'll try to remember to update this thread if conditions change at
Roach. Here's a map to the dry lake from the Jean airport.

I've emailed over a week ago to two addresses on the LVVS website and gotten
no response so I'll post my questions here:

My wife and I plan to bring my LAK-17a to Roach Dry lake for the ground
launch activities and I want to know if there are any special requirements
to participate.

I'm ground launch qualified with both winch and auto tow. I'm also
qualified to self launch (if I had one!) and aero tow.

I'm an SSA member and fully insured and I hold a Diamond Badge.

So... Will we be welcome and will I be able to ground launch with you?

You will absolutely be welcomed! You must be an SSA member, and pay the whopping $10.00 guest membership fee (per day). Auto tows will be $10.00 each, with aero tows available at current club (cheap!) rates. Bring sunscreen, lots of water or whatever you use to maintain hydration. I'm going out weekend after next to drive our line and check conditions. If we get significant rain, and the dry lake is un-usable, we'll camp at the airport and do aero tows.
Feel free to email me directly from here, or at griderpirate<at>yahoo<dot>com

Can't make "reply to sender" work with my mail reader.

Great! We'll see you there. Having just camped for a weekend at Truth or
Consequences with the sky dive club's annual Water Boogie, we elected to get
a motel room.

Okay on the Hotel, but you really need to stick around long enough for dinner. There's always WAY too much food! We also do breakfast Sunday morning.. <G>

We had some really BIG rain out here last week, and the dry like
currently isn't. I'll check again next weekend, and report what I
find.

The surface of Roach Dry lake is good. The road to it suffered from
the recent hard rain. It is safe, and there are no places where a
normal car would get stuck, but 10-ish mph is about as fast as you'd
want to go. Rigging at Jean and taking a short tug to get the glider
there is an option.

The fall 2012 Roach Dry Lake Auto Tow event was another good time! We
didn't
get any cooperation from the lift dogs, but had a good time anyhow.
The surface
of the lakebed was better than ever, the food great, and the fire hot!
Dave H.
introduced us to a weird and interesting practice. He placed a shovel
full of
hot coals under the camp chairs of folks. It's amazing how quickly
that dispels
the chill!
Jo-Ann and George provided coffee, lattes, and blueberry pancakes for
breakfast, while Mad Dog produced an abundance of awesome breakfast
burritos.
The serving table was liberally covered with an assortment of muffins,
sweet
rolls, and doughnuts. As usual, the only thing we were short of was
enough
hungry folks to deal with all of the food!
Dan W. came down from Utah with his Ventus, and Dan M. drove all the
way from
New Mexico with his LAK-17! I think both had a pretty good time,
despite the
lack of lift.

Cheers,
Jim

That's WAY more fun, and in the spring, it won't get so darn cold at night! Who knows, we might even have some Thermals!!

I had a lot of fun even though the thermals were missing this time - maybe next spring we will have 300 and 400 km flights like we did last spring. I'll be back in the spring for the next encampment for sure and bring my telescope again - Saturn and Jupiter will both be visible then.

Thanks again for letting us "outsiders" enjoy your club hospitality.
