View Full Version : I hate winter

Jeff
January 5th 04, 05:13 AM
I am ready for winter to be over.
the strong winds aloft are a killer when your ready to get back home.

This morning I flew my wifes brother and his wife back to Casa Grande
Az. from Las Vegas, getting down there was pretty quick, hour and 45
minutes, getting back was 2 hours and 15 minutes. My worst GS was when I
climed to 10.5 to go over a mountain near kingman Az, I thought I was
sucking with my 130 kt GS at 8500 ft, at 10.5 I was getting a
blistering 117 kts!!!!!

Jeff.. the winter winds yesterday kept the glider club on the ground... but
on New Years Day we were wave soaring off the Spring Mountain Range..

see those stacked lennies off Mt Charleston?

such is winter... I just don't like the cold..

Oh, stop complaining!
When I flew down to Sun N Fun last year I had 75 mph indicated with 54
mph groundspeed.
At least the cars weren't passing you!

42knots ground speed today at 13000 in level flight over KTVL in my C152
(100 KTAS). It was very smooth, but my son and I did not wait around long
to find the bumps. We just flew up to enjoy the view and the ride. Winter
over Tahoe is beautiful but yes, I too like the warmer months.

It hasn't even started yet, except by the calendar. The two coldest

Wait till you catch a 100 knot plus wind. <:-))
We took off out of Marysvill KS a few years back with winds 30 G 50
right down the runway. At 500 feet we had well over 100 knots of tail
wind headed east. We sure did make good time getting out of there.
That wind stayed with us for about a 150 miles. We still had a 40
know tail wind once out in the clear and up at 7500 feet .

I think it's time to plug in the old Tanis heater. Forecast is for
highs in the single digits to low teens for most of the week. Lows?

the crappy weather kept me home yesterday also, I was suppose to take my wifes
brother home saturday, I tried, but it was just plain crappy weather. FSS
reported unstable air the entire route, 4500 ft ceilings at casa grande, winds
gusting to 31 mph, ice at all altitudes.

I have never seen gliders flying, but then again I dont hang around by the
mountains, I dont like the air bouncing off them.

just have had about 9 inches of snow within 24 hours in the capital - huge

Pshaw. The very best flying is in winter. And it's just getting started!

Yesterday we got creamed with 8 inches of light, fluffy snow -- now
everything is gorgeous around here! (There is nothing worse than flying
over Iowa in January when all the snow has melted... 60,000 square miles of
MUD.) A true winter wonderland, we've become.

And, since we spent the entire afternoon/evening yesterday partying for the
playoffs (Go Pack!), I was glad the weather sucked for flying. Now,
everything is white, crisp, and cold. Our rate of climb will be easily over
1400 fpm, and visibility will be 1000 miles.

And you'll be able to fly at night the same as in the daytime -- even
without a moon. (The white snow reflects even starlight amply enough to fly
by...)

Now that I'm not in newspapers anymore, I'll take this weather over that
"flying inside a ping-pong ball" effect we get in July...

I was just into San Carlos Apache and Stellar last week. I agree, the
winter winds in the area make the eastbound trip less than quick.

I was getting 170 kts GS on the way there, gross weight, it was on the
ground 30 minutes before heading back, I tried to make the plane a bit
heavier by adding full fuel since I had emptied everything out of the
plane.

In the summer time, I can usually get 150 kts down and back, or real
close to 150 kts.

Here it will start getting better come march, Feb. and Mar.

100 kt tail wind, was the ride smoothe or ??

Last week I ferried my plane back over to north las vegas from henderson,
winds at north town on the ground were only 11 kts, at henderson they were 31
and almost a 90 degree xwind when I took off, I could feel the plane wanting
to move left as I was rolling. downdrafts was horrible as soon as I took off,
it starts to get pretty sporty when the winds here get like that at ground
level. you do everything you can just to hang on.

ya my clime rate was outstanding, at gross (2900 lbs) I was about 1100 fpm.
Cruise climb I was getting 500 fpm at 110 kts. Impressed me, and here I was
worrying about carrying to much fuel.

Denver. Clear. Sunny. No winds. Smooth.

And it's 5 F. I'm at home in front of a warm computer screen. When
it's this cold, I don't care about preheating the airplane, I can't
be bothered putting on all that cold weather gear on me!

Of course Wed. it'll be back into the 50s.

A cute, but common, misperception. Parts of Iowa are far from flat!

And while Iowa City is not mountainous by any stretch, we live on a hill.

The hotel, of course, being adjacent to the airport, is on a
flat-as-a-pancake parcel of land just south of some pretty good ridge-lines.

Mmm... a pleasant treat for us here on the USA East Coast Saturday as I flew
to the NC outer banks where the temps were in the mid 70s. Fairly clear
with a little haze as the wind was quite calm (the ride was like the living

Sometime in the next two or three months I have to make a permanent move to

Wed...That's two days! Last I remember all it takes is the wind to
shift from the west and 3 hours later it's 20 to 30 degrees warmer.
Wellll... That was in Boulder.

Here? Midland Mi...Same oh, same oh... Dull, dreary, cloudy, clear for
Michigan (visibility is over 6) with a low of around 5. Course we
don't get to have those breathers like you do out near the mountains.
Course I don't remember having 9 feet of snow here, like they did at
my Daughter's place near Rollinsville last Winter.

I don't think we've had a storm with more than a foot of snow in over
15 years. Up into the 60s two or three feet with 5 foot plus drifts
wasn't uncommon.

OTOH I only have to fly about a 100 miles north or NW to find winter.

I'm from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. I've flown through Iowa and
Kansas. You don't have hills out there... Those are Mountains!

Around here, if you spill a pint of water it'd cover 40 acres if it
didn't soak in first. Course the DNR would declare it wet lands in
that case.

Actually the vast majority of Lower Michigan is one great big swamp
that was drained to create farm land. They never got around to
draining the UP. You abandon a field around here and it really will
qualify as wet lands in 4 or 5 years.

Just getting started? Bah. Last winter I managed just over 4 hours,
from the 6 month inspection in October to the annual in April.
Feels a bit of a waste doing an oil and filter change having flown
only 4 hours. Even when it is flyable it damages the (grass) runway,
gets mud all over the underside of the wings, and if landing downhill
(into the prevailing wind...too shallow the other way with a good
tailwind to hit the start of the shortish runway) you might not be able
to stop.
