Perhaps folks have missed digging in to see what's on the Agenda for the Fall SSA Board of Directors Meeting. In case you need a direct link, SSA members can use

As most are on the road or in the air, a very few reports and agenda items aren't on the page but were distributed to directors.

Wow! I wonder who got the "honor" of that beat-down? So glad that our government and law enforcement is there to protect us, even if it has to kill us to do it.

We have a power reactor and other nuclear related stuff north of us
(Richland, WA). That area has "For reason of national security, pilots
are requested to avoid flight below 1800' MSL in this area". That's
about 1300 AGL. As I understand it, it's just a request, not a requirement.

If they are only two miles from an airport, it seem they would see a lot
of aircraft in the 1000-2000 foot AGL range, either over them or nearby.
Maybe it was the circling that bothered them? In any case, it was nutty
to think about "shooting down" any aircraft that they had time to worry
about. An aircraft with evil intentions would simply fly straight into
the reactor, long before they could arrange any "shoot down".

I wonder what is missing from what we've heard so far; at least the FAA
got it right, as I would expect.

Thanks guys, I noted the referenced link and downloaded the PDF of the letter days ago.

I just went looking for it using a different path to confirm its veracity. Not that I would ever doubt something I've seen on RAS ;-) The whole thing has the weird vibe of an urban legend and I was trying to get it straight from the original sources. My point was that I didn't find a way to get to the file containing the AOPA letter on the SSA website. Seems like the logical place to find it might be "News".

Now, now, let's not generalize so much. We've had these sensitive areas,
like reactors and dams, for 11 years now, and this is the first time a
glider pilot has been harassed. This seems to be a very special case,
not "a propensity to police state excesses"; remember, the FAA said it
was fine.

I wuz just winding RAS up Eric...

Someone DID get locked up without good cause or due process. Some
sheriff being over zealous no doubt, but still good for a dig at
officialdom.

Again, my point is it's not "officialdom" that appears to be the
problem, but more likely an "official" - one person, perhaps two or
three in one place at that particular time.

What I've noticed over the years is we rarely know all the details, so
it's difficult to asses the blame; for example, maybe these people were
on a super-alert because they'd had recent communications from Homeland
Security about potential terrorist acts; maybe the glider pilot was
belligerent instead of accommodating; and so on. It does no good to trot
out our favorite bogeyman whenever things like this happen, given our
lack of knowledge of the situation.
