GPSMAP 195 altitude

[S Narayan]

I have the GPSMAP195 and it looks like there is no way to get altitude
information to be stored and then later downloaded as part of the track
information. The only way around it is to have a computer connected that can
download the data real time (NMEA). I checked the firmware upgrades which go
up to 3.01, but don't see any way to add this capability. Are the newer
GPS's like the 196 or 296 storing altitude information?

A while back I looked at the specs on the Garmin web site, and while the
195 definitely does NOT store the altitude, it appears that the 295
*might*. I don't remember what it said about the 196, but I think it was
the same as the 295.

I've been trying to find that out about any of the aviation hand-helds, with
little success. I can tell you that the Lowrance 100 does not. And about
the newer Lowrances (500 and 1000)-- I got two opposite answers from a
single email inquiry to Lowrance, but later did more extensive googling of
sci.gps.satellite (or some such) which seemed to indicate that they did not
store the altitude component in their track record.

I enjoy using the tracks with OziExplorer, and critiquing instrument
procedures (actual and simulated) definitely would benefit from this third
dimension. On the other hand, when I take non-pilots for rides, I record
the track and then a few days later send them a map of the area with the
track overlaid-- of course for that no altitude is necessary or useful.

The 295 does record the altitudes if you enable the track logging. It
is retrievable by exporting the track log to the Mapsource software.
Each leg of the tracking will have altitude data shown for the leg. I
have used this with great sucess in displaying balloon flights, once
back at home.

The 196 DOES store altitude in the track. You can view the track on the
map. If you select the track, you can then select: view | profile and see
the altitude profile for the track. You can also look in the log table.

It's all in the user's manual which can be downloaded from Garmin's web
site.

And when I first got my 196 it would nag the snot out of me that I was
approaching the destination and I needed to start letting down NOW, showing
a fpm rate based on my present altitude... I finally got tired of the back
seat driving and shut that feature off...

My 195 does that too. I like it when I'm VFR, but of course it's not much
help when IFR.

Well, looks like I have to be satisfied with time, speed and position
information with the 195. It would have been nice to log the altitude and
play it back later.

Or you could always upgrade to the GPSMAP 196! It is an awsome piece
of equipment. I recently upgraded my GPS Pilot III for the 196 and I
am very impressed. But thanks to this thread, I learned about the
altitude recording feature. Using OziExplorer, you can view the
profile of the track, very nice. And now I realized I can use
OziExplorer to print a sectional with the track overlaid and give it
to passengers after the flight. Thanks for all the info in this
thread!

If your passengers are not pilots they may prefer the track overlaid to a
civil map. My favorite source is
http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl because it's very flexible
about what features you may want to show up. (A tip though: to get an image
bigger than 422x359, click on "download GIF image", then manually change the
URL parameters at the end of the URL from "ht=359&iwd=422" to whatever you
want, and hit enter).
