When performing eights on pylons, is the goal to keep the target at the same
vertical position on the side window, as well as at the same horizontal
position?

Yes, you want your point to stay "frozen" in your window. The vertical
sight line is estimated when it's 90 degrees from your forward-looking
position and and its height on the window is the same as your eyes looking
sideways if you were wings level. A big misconception is lining up the
point with the plane's lateral axis [goes through the c.g. point], but that
can't be done properly unless your head is there. The maneuver is akin
to a rescue operation wherein the pilot has to stay visual with the found
object,
maintain safety for plane and occupants, and fly the airplane correctly to
coordinate all this but not necessarily in that order of priority - always
think
-aviate, navigate, communicate-

Gary,

Yes.

With the ball ALWAYS centered as screwing up this maneuver kills way
too many people due to uncoordinated, accelerated stalls.

See Kershner's book, _The Advanced Pilot's Flight Manual_ for a
complete discussion.

All the best,
Rick
