World soaring contest logger requirements

Hi,

I received a question from a customer today that I couldn't answer. He is
going to fly in the World Gliding Contest in Argentina soon and couldn't
figure out whether or not his Cambridge GPS-NAV would be acceptable to the
contest - since it is no longer approved for world records.

I can't seem to find anything in the Sporting Code for world contests - but
I didn't spend too long looking for it.

The customer has several other loggers that will work fine (LX7000 and LXNAV
Nano) - so the GPS-NAV should be a backup only.

Anyone have any idea about this?

I calibrated several loggers while at the World Gliding Contest in Uvalde,
TX in August, but I don't remember whether or not any of them were GPS-NAV
units.

Hi Paul. The local procedures file from the organizers (at
http://www.wgc2012.com.ar/documents.html) quotes sporting code annex A
para 5.4 for Flight Recorders, which says in part:

5.4 CONTROL PROCEDURES Flights shall be controlled by GNSS Flight
Recorders (FR).
a. All FRs approved by the IGC up to two months prior to the Opening
Day shall be accepted. A valid calibration certificate must be
provided for each FR.
The FAI SC Section 3 requires that Flight Recorders have been
calibrated within the previous 24 months.
b. Two FRs may be used. One being designated to the Organisers as the
primary recorder and the other one as a back-up.

There is a bit more, but it doesn't speak to this (intervals, etc).

This doesn't talk at all about the various levels of approval - just
that they have to be approved by the IGC ("All FRs"...). If his GPS
Nav is, no problem. The organizers have the option of being more
strict, but by quoting Annex A 5.4, they aren't. If he is still
worried, an e-mail to the organizers would confirm that it's ok.

At Uvalde, the organizers limited it to a primary and secondary; if a
3rd FR might be used (if a primary or secondary went unserviceable),
it had to be validated as working during the practice period (by
submitting an igc file for scoring), and had to replace either the
primary or secondary by a request by team captain for future flights.
I see in the Argentina local procedures they're ok with 2 or more FRs.

Dan Daly replied and referenced the appropriate document, though in typical FAI fashion it is hard to find details. It is up to the local organizers to state the approved FR. If they do the same as in Uvalde then ...

I scored the Open Class at Uvalde and there was at least one pilot that used GPS-NAV FR used for primary and secondary loggers.
