SZD-19 Zefir 2A in USA?

Anybody know anything about what happened to the one Zefir 2A that came to the US? It was registration number N86674. Shows up in the NTSB Database as having crashed near Cedar City, Utah, on June 26, 1968. Sailplane Directory issue of April 1970 said that Jerry Austin of Pasadena, CA owned it, but it had been badly damaged and may not ever fly again. Found some videos on YouTube posted this past summer of one flying in Argentina.

Well, the discussion continues about "The ultimate Wooden Sailplane". I think I could put a Zefir up against any wooden Schempp-Hirth product and come out on top. After a while, may change this thread to "What do you think is the ultimate performing wooden sailplane?"

Would be neat to find a flyable one for a reasonable sum to import. I suspect that one was burned many years ago.

I know of this one, overhauled and up for sale - for a reasonable sum of monies, however it looks like its been sold... Write to Henryk and he will provide the details.

Thanks for the lead. I seem to recall having seen this one a few
years back. They were asking something around 20,000 Euro.

- It wasn't few years back because few years back it belonged to my friend who had plans of enjoying it... Anyways, price wise I think it was asked around 14K Euro, but i'm bad with remembering ever rising values, so to get a unprecedented information please contact Jezow who overhauled it and had it advertised for sale for a while.
I doubt why would anyone import it half around the globe to Argentina, but again I might be wrong.

Nah, its got glass spars and skins. The balsa is just there to
stabilize the structure. Or, is it the other way around? :-)

The Zephir in the video from Argentina is based at my club. It was one of the gliders that the Polish team brought for the 1963 WGC. I think there were three and they all stayed in Argentina but this is probably the only one still flying. The present owner did a complete restoration job and it looks and flies very nice. Years ago the flaps were modified so they could lower completely to a landing position and not have to depend on the tail chute. The Zephir has no spoilers so there are some interesting anecdotes about when the tail chute failed to open.. The problem with the landing gear in the video was the gear light switch that got stuck. The gear itself was OK.
The same guy also owns a PIK 16 Vasama that flew in the 1963 WGC. It appears in one of his videos.

Thank you for the information on that Zephir, Juan Carlos. It is
indeed beautifully restored! I imagine his heart rate was up a bit
when the red light did not go out. But I applaud his decision to
ignore the gear indication and fly the plane after several attempts to
get the green light. Do you, by chance, know which one of the three
this one is? One was flown by Ed Makula, one by Jerzy Popiel (both of
Poland, placed 1 and 2 respectively) and the third was flown by your
own Rudolfo Hossinger, who placed 5th. I thought I had seen pictures
of one hanging in a museum in Poland that claimed to be the one Makula
had flown to the World Championships.
