View Full Version : New Runway at Moriarty!

December 21st 12, 03:20 PM
On Tuesday, December 18, the new runway at Moriarty, NM (0E0) was officially dedicated by the State of NM, City of Moriarty and representatives from all airport users. The new pavement is 6,200 ft. x 75 ft. and is aligned North/South. This means that we are finally going to be able to reduce our crosswind TO/LDG practice. Construction officially started September 4, and was completed a couple of weeks ago, well ahead of schedule and under budget!

Now with the main runway (26/8, 7,500 x 75) and the new 18/36, usage of the airport should increase, both for power traffic and soaring aircraft, as the sometimes excessive crosswinds occasionally limited flying activity.

The Alnuquerque Soaring Club, Sundance Aviation and the City of Moriarty invite all soaring pilots to come out and enjoy some of the World's best soaring at one of the most glider-friendly airports anywhere.

Thanks to the Federal Aviation Administration, NM State Aviation Division (NMDOT), City of Moriarty, Moriarty Airport Advisory Board, Molzen-Corbin Engineers, Mountain States Constructors and everybody else who worked for the last 14 years to make this happen!

While some of us will miss the crosswind landing practice that is pretty much guaranteed there, I think most will welcome this.

I know of a few gliders and airplanes that were eaten by the Moriarty crosswind - including a few locals! I am sure we'll hear of a few if this thread continues.

Whoa! Early and under budget? How did that happen?

Probably didn't need the rain days.

I made the first landing on runway 18 while it was still closed and under
construction. Of course, I first declared an emergency due to the 24 kt
direct cross wind on runway 26 and took care to land well beyond all the
construction crews and equipment. Yesterday, I landed on RWY 36, took off,
and landed on RWY 26 (in the Pawnee).

Someone else has the honor of making the first "official" landing, of
course...
