Canopy question

What is what looks like metallic tape in some sort of a pattern you can see on
the canopy of some jet fighters?

IT is a small explosive charge intended to shatter the canopy as part
of the ejection process.

It does what Waldo said, and it's called miniature detonating cord, MDC.

Thanks. Makes sense to me now, except I always thought the whole canopy just
jettisoned before the seat was shot out..

That is the way they were done in the old days.
It takes too long for the canopy to get out of the way.
