Someone on another group just posted one of these. I had no idea someone was

Spammer of the month award.

And if anyone thinks I'm joking - then (politely) ask Jay to drop his
SIG file advert from future posts and see what he says to that idea.

Jay I feel that YOU are spamming these aviation newsgroups with
your SIG file and your constant references to your website and
I am politely asking you to drop any reference to AlexisParkInn
from future postings.

If anyone else feels the same way then ask Jay the same question
and see for yourself what his response is.

Including Jay in a definition of spam is pretty broad. Spam is trying to
sell a scheme to make me rich, or leading me to a porno site, or filling the
newsgroup with those weird topics that kept popping up a month or so ago -
"Willingness of a thousand flying puppies" or whatever they were.

Of course, I like money and nudity, and I really like rich naked women, so
maybe I'm the wrong one to comment.

A signature attached to a posting is never a problem (the posting itself
above the signature should contain content) to a usenet posting AS LONG AS
there is a correct signature separator "-- " (dash dash space; on a single
line) AND the signature should not exceed 4 lines. This is common practise
on usenet.

One *might* discuss the "shameless plugs", but they are almost always
connected to aviation, so I see it not as a really big problem at all.

I might not be on the same line with Jay on the one or other viewpoint, but
I can't blame him for his signature (AFAIR he corrected the signature
separator)

greetings, martin

example for a working signature:

here is a link to a microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/
I can write my (political) opinion here, it is OK to be "off topic"
the sig should not exceed 4 lines and should only be max. 80 chars.
so here comes my last line ....................... have a good day.

Gee, before I owned an airplane, all my sig line said was "Iowa City, IA"
(Which is a damn-sight more than I can say about YOUR signature line.)

Then, in 1998, we added "Warrior N33431". When we sold that in 2002, and
bought Atlas, it became "Pathfinder N56993".

Then, when Mary and I debated (here, by the way, with many of you all) long
and hard about buying an old hotel, and converting it to an aviation theme,
fly-in destination, I added our new website to the signature. That was also
in 2002.

I guess you could say it's been a natural progression.

Now, then, let's talk about YOU. Who are you, and what right do you have to
question my signature?

As far as I can tell, you've never contributed anything here except for a
smartass comment or two.

Jay's been posting here for about as long as anyone, jerkweed. It wasn't
until relatively recently that he started including his sig with his posts.
Any even the sig is "aviation related". Buzz off if'n you don't like it.

I'm just a lurker who understands clearly what you are doing and why.

You have already been gently chastised for running chronic updates to
your rogue's gallery and been forced by your peers to restrict yourself
to a monthly update.

But that doesn't help you to get your message out about your hotel.

So what's left to you besides having the URL as part of your SIG file,
and what better way to get your SIG file out there than to become the
de facto most prolific poster in aviation related newsgroups.

That's smart marketing Jay and your not the only person in the world
who practices that sort of newsgroup marketing.

But please don't be arrogant and play dumb that some people in those
groups don't truly understand what your ulterior motives are.

Just the other day you started posting text messages with links in the
aviation binary newsgroup regarding your new multi-media clips. That's
not a multi-media newsgroup and the regulars there want to see
contributors POSTING pictures not posting links to a commercial site
for an aviation themed hotel.

"Ulterior"? That's a fairly strong statement with no basis in presented
fact. Jay contributes here, unlike some other people. His posts have
sufficient utility that they're seen. More, his posts generate non-flaming
replies, further demonstrating the utility of those posts.

Can you say the same?

Jay's signatures are aviation-related, but there's no mandate for this. A
signature can be whatever the user wants. As Jay is following the standard
for such things, anyone motivated to tell their newsreader to ignore
signatures would never see it.

Oh my God...Jay is saving bandwidth by posting links instead of entire
binaries? What is the world coming too? Doesn't he realize that he pays
for the "link" bandwidth, while he'd be using other people's bandwidth if
he posted the entire file?

Jay, what type of weird-o are you, failing to freeload on the USENET
infrastructure?

I appreciate Jay's post. His .signature is not out of line.
People ask about his business, and he tells about recent updates,
and the ups and downs of his business. He even invited YOU to the
free beer and pool party enroute to Oshkosh next year. Jay often
talks (writes) about his piloting experiences with the family.

Jay is NOT a spammer. He posts with his email address, and his
web ADDRESS. I know EXACTLY who he is and how/where to find
him to discuss PRIVATELY anything that might be on my mind
about his postings.

However... I don't know who you are, or what you do. Care to
enlighten us?

Dude, get a clue. I'll bet pilots, especially pilots who also read
these few newsgroups, are a tiny fraction of Jay's clientel. Jay is a
prolific poster 'cause he:

- has too much energy
- has too much time
- doesn't have a life
- all of the above

His posts are usually entertaining, sometimes ignorant but rarely
arrogant. He's definitely a positive element of these groups so who
cares if we know all about his Inn? I stopped there once, it was the
best motel I stayed at on my journey.

Hey -- it's February in Iowa. How much of a life can I have? :-)

Actually, my life is incredibly full, between family, flying, and the
business. 18 hour days are the norm.

I'm just a fast typist, and I don't need much sleep.

Hell, if it wasn't for input from a lot of you guys (and gals) we probably
wouldn't have bought the inn. This group has, in many ways, helped to
create our hotel.

You obviously do not know Usenet protocol. Posting a one or two line sig
containing a link about one's own business is acceptable practice.

Jay contributes to this group far more than he benefits from his sig
containing a link to his business.

neither to me. I merely disagree with the original poster (C. Observer,
"And if anyone thinks I'm joking - then (politely) ask Jay to drop his SIG
file advert from future posts and see what he says to that idea."). IIRC, I
think you're allowed to disagree out here in usenet land.

>Man, get a life.

Great suggestion but I already have one that I'm quite satisfied with.

Quite silly, I know, in a newsgroup so full of anonymous posters...

Well we're talking about sig lines here. If you go over the hold short
line you might get can openered by that jet on short final. I'm pretty
sure that can't happen on a newsgroup.
