Don't know why I don't know this,
Don't know why I haven't inquired before...

What ~is~ that canister on top?

Seen it on several makes/models.

Is it an oiler/oil cooler?

Maybe an Ale - Eron? (groan)

The gravity tank appears on 'some' 504k's. There is a main petrol and
oil tank mounted in the fuselage between the engine and the fore
coclpit. Detailes drawing are in the Windsock Datafile for the 504K.
If you want I can post pages or the whole thing.

In these gravity tanks fuel is typically moved to the tank by the
actions of a wind driven propeller operating a pump.

Waldo.

Something to keep in mind is that while the 504 indeed has most of the
"looks" of a modern biplane, they were first built in 1913!
