What ~is~ that canister on top?
Seen it on several makes/models.
Is it an oiler/oil cooler?

The gravity tank appears on 'some' 504k's. There is a main petrol and
oil tank mounted in the fuselage between the engine and the fore
coclpit. Detailes drawing are in the Windsock Datafile for the 504K.
If you want I can post pages or the whole thing.
In these gravity tanks fuel is typically moved to the tank by the
actions of a wind driven propeller operating a pump.

Something to keep in mind is that while the 504 indeed has most of the
"looks" of a modern biplane, they were first built in 1913!
