Fantastic collection of soaring history online. The Lakes Gliding Club in the UK has scanned the British Gliding magazines beginning with 1930, and more:

Here is the 1970 Marfa (TX) World Soaring Championship article (from the British point of view) with photos of Neil Armstrong at Marfa, from the OCT-NOV 1970 issue of "Sailplane & Gliding":

Neil Armstrong flew sailplanes at Marfa in the 1960's. Returned to Marfa 1970 after his historic cross-country flight in 1969. (The moon was his turn point.)

I thought he outlanded but was able to self launch.

He landed out by 250,000 miles? What a horrible pilot. ;)
