I know it's not soaring, but... Enjoy!

I always thought the P 38 was the "coolest" WW II fighter. I know a guy who was a mechanic in the Pacific during the war. He's a little guy and says he would sometimes sit behind the pilot, all crunched up, in order to analyze in-flight problems. Does anyone know why they chose a yoke instead of a stick?

P38 cockpit is very narrow. The yoke deconflicts the pilots legs.

Well kinda sorta. Bob Symons once soared his p-38 in the wave at bishop.

My Dad serviced Charlie Lindberg's P-38 when he passed through New Guinnea
enroute to teach the pilots how to extend their range (resulting in the
shooting down of Yamamoto).

More likely it was due to the large size of the P-38 compared to other contemporary fighters. It was designed before WW2, remember! Until the late J and L models got hydraulic aileron boost, it had a relatively slow initial roll rate.
The late Js and Ls fixed that. In all performance measures (except for cost) they were superior to any other US fighter.
Only US fighter in continuous production for the entire time the US was at war.
