March 1st 04, 04:58 PM
Yesterday, 29 Feb, Brazoria County Airport just south of Houston.

Perp cut locks on 16 hangers .
Only thing taken was a C-172 and two 6 pacs (Texas staff of life).
T/O was about 06:30.
Wx was a band of heavy haze and fog
Airplane ran into high tension lines 3 miles from airport.
Knocked power out for 11,000 customers.
A/C crashed after hitting wires, on penitentiary property.
Totaled
No evidence of an attempted jail break.
No blood in cockpit.
Pilot got out and left his two passengers (6 pacs) in bird.
Foot prints show he took off in a southerly direction.
Still not apprehended
Owner says no one was authorized to fly bird.
If anyone sees a wayward pilot, please report to proper authorities
:o)

Only data released so far has been via local TV and morning paper.

I saw an earlier article on the crash, with no pilot anywhere near the
plane. At that time they hadn't found out about the breakin, and didn't
know where the plane came from. Sigh... another failed Darwin Award
candidate!

Insurance scam??? fire it up and let it go??? would the plane just take
off on it's own if left to it's own devices with no crosswind???

..... just wild - uniformed speculation....

It couldn't have been an insurance scam. The owner lives in Texas, and
no red-blooded Texan would leave two six-packs behind. Must have been a
teetotaler from Missouri or somewhere. <duck>

No, it was a Baptist. They drink all right but wouldn't get caught
dead with the booze <G>

This is double duck. Am sure some good Baptists will get in the queue.

This mornings paper said that some people driving along the road saw a
man coming from the wreck. He said that two others (if there were) had
gone back to the airport.

They published an artist rendition of the perp . If caught those who
saw him can identify in line up.

That wouldn't explain the footprints leading away from the wreck site.

From chron.com's story:
"Brazoria County Chief Deputy Sheriff Charles Wagner said Kadlecek knew
the airport layout because he had performed community service there after
one of his previous arrests."

Aaaaggghhh! D*mn, I thought community service was a good thing, but now
I'm not so sure... :> Can't they send them out to clean highway ditches or
something?

I am glad this drunk doofus wasn't a real pilot, though... that would have
been bad PR private pilots don't need...

Brian.

I wonder what the first plane he tried was. Anyone know? Heck, I
thought the 172R was complicated when I first got in it.

Latest from this mornings Houston paper.

1. Caught guy.
2. 21 year old who had been celebrating his 21st birthday for four
days.
3. Taxied a Bo around and decided to many things in cockpit.
4. Got in 172 and taxied and when on R/W said what the hell and pushed
throttle up and when it looked like it was going fast enough pulled
the wheel back and it flew.
5. Had the POM open on seat beside him.
6 Was a blue collar worker who lived 3 miles from Field and had worked
on field as a handy man.
7. Bird is still a total.

Owner had bird in locked hanger but had left the 'key' in A/C because
he had just returned from a flight??? Only an hour of fuel in bird.

And so closes this story.

It's a pretty good demonstration of how stable and easy some airplanes
are to use. If a drunken idiot can figure out how to start it up by
using the manual, and then fly it, without any training whatsoever...

Considering the guy's record, it would appear that he's not an idiot,
he's a sociopath.

And he was on probation for burglary with previous arrest for
running off with other people's vehicles. Is this the kind of guy
that should be doing community service at an airport? Why not have
him count the money for the local United Way drive?

We'll get it anyway. Expect a lot more pressure to "secure" our aircraft.
