Hey alla yall!

You know, I wonder...

If the lack of traffic here is due to the net, or due to a lack of
home-built activity.

I used to know a couple dozen guys actively building aircraft.

Now I only know one.

There are a lot of projects/completions here at Spruce Creek.

I know your work, Orval.
What are the others building?

We have a TON of RVs of various flavors, about 6 SX-300s, Lancairs, Cubs
and Cub clones, a Questair, several Glastars -- to name a few.

Among the RVs, there are at least three flights of four or more that fly
together in good formations, plus the "Red Flight" of SX-300s, plus
Lancair and Questair.

Our EAA meetings (tonight is one) usually attract 75 or more people and
have interesting programs.

I'm building an RV-9A.
But it wouldn't even occur to me to post here...I use VAF.

Hi Harry,

I've tried www.homebuitairplaness.com.
Not much real work happening there.
Lots of fancified fools with grand ideas tho.
(Not a single RV builder, so you know nothings happening)

And I'm really not pleased with the web forum format.
Not compared to the Usenet format anyway.
Things drift off the front page into obscurity.

I'm really only an interested onlooker. My BIL in Kamloops BC built
an ultra-light (by Canadian standard" named it "buffy" (for expired
pet). AFAIK he only flew it a few times and sold it. I go baback in
RAH to the days of Badwater Bill. Lots of interesting stuff happening
back then.

Me neither, but what can you do? Usenet, being utterly unmoderated, is a
troll's paradise. Web-based forums are terrible for a lot of reasons,
but Usenet has become worse.

It's Vans. That has a lot going for it.
But it's one type out of the hundreds developed over the years.

YEP If the participants all had discipline, the trolls would be
ignored and go away. It seems that is too difficult of a concept for
some. Was last go around, anyway. I would love to see this group have
a o again. Perhaps the offender isn't around, and we could convince
people to not feed him if he is.

We (it took both of us) trimmed the cat's claws last night.

I love the Cherokee.
I have about 20 hours or so in a 140.
That's a fun airplane.

And relatively inexpensive as far as planes go. It isn't fast but it goes,
and that's the important part.

I'll try to add something constructive here.

I'm part-way (most-way?) through doing the fiberglass cowl halves for an
RV-9A. "Doing" means first fitting them, then attaching them, then
sealing them. So far I find it less fun than the canopy, which in spite
of the scare stories was straightforward in comparison.

The cowl halves are fitted (trimmed and fit), attachments placed (hinges
for the two halves, Skybolt fasteners around the firewall), and now I'm
sealing the fiberglass with WEST system epoxy. A messy job since the
epoxy, thinned with lacquer thinner or acetone per Vans instructions,
runs and drips, and then the sanding is tedious and just a chore. But I
discovered last night that wet sanding is far superior! No dust, just
rinse with the hose occasionally to get rid of the slurry, and my
cordless Makita orbital sander still works. It's even easy to see what
areas are properly sanded, and which aren't, by the way the water sheets
or beads.

I miss Badwater and Juan about as much as cancer...
and the feelings were mutual even back then.

Bill, the bully, was the greatest pilot on the planet.
Jaun was a genius too, if you listened to him.

Myself, at 75, I still fly my RV3 and am far from dead.
With 59 years of licensed flight, I've seen a lot of pilots
screw the pooch that thought they were hot ****.

For you, Clare, I still think car engines in airplanes suck!

P.S.
Who I do really miss is Vicki Cruse, Zoom's ex-wife.
We were good friends until her untimely death in England.

Tons of reasons.
None of which convinces an auto engine enthusiast to cease and desist!

For the record, there are many successful Volkswagen and Corvair
engines powering homebuilts. Model A Fords engines have had
success as well. There are others, but no need at this time.

My favorite all time auto engine conversion is a Mazda rotory.

................

I like flying.
I like auto engines.

I like my highly modified 460 hp small block Corvette.
When it quits, I coast to the curb and call for a tow truck and
a taxi to take me home.

Try that with your auto powered airborne crate, especially as
a low time fearless pilot that has no idea how far over his head
he is.. and his wife and kids too, if they tag along.

Given decades of experience... I also like not being a test pilot
just fer grins and 'education'.

There are few with the skills, talent, brains and data to pull off
anything more than what might be called mediocre while putting
their necks at risk.

With that said, those without the proper set of skills, talent, brains
and data can't wait to jump on the bandwagon with their ignorance.
These doods that are first in line to risk their fearless chops.

The typical auto engine conversion person has not a single hour of
flight... he/she will get to that later. The whole idea of an auto
engine many times is cost... a Lycoming being too expensive.
Ditto for flying lessons.. at least until the plane is well along.

I can get in the air faster, better, and in the long run, cheaper,
and safer with a Lycoming and in a pinch... a Continental.

But.. that defeats the challenge of an auto engine doesn't it? <g>

Oh well.

Call me a coward... and a tow truck when the 'need arises.

Glad you didn't mention "Jim" as in Jim W. A consummate asshole, and
apparently the last few years an unreliable businessman. Fortunately the
new editor of Kitplanes, Paul Dye, has added Bob Nuckolls to the list of
writers for things-electrical...maybe booted JW's sorry ass out entirely.

Well, it's an "Old Fart" ejection seat. I've got a knee that's gotten
so bad, I was having trouble lifting myself out of the cockpit. I
adapted a portable "Lift Seat" intended for elderly folks. Added a 110V
inverter to power it. Lifts me about eight inches in ~20 seconds.
Here's an animated GIF (that runs fast) showing the amount of lift:

That's the gentlest ejection I've ever seen.

Passed first inspection. Slowed down by partner having 2 knees
replaced and 2 daughters.

The Pegazair is a French Canadian STOL bushplane - all aluminum flying
surfaces, rag and tube fuselage - fabric only from doors back. 150 sq
ft wing, full span flaperons plus automatic slats and inverted flying
tail.
2 seater side by side, 40 inches wide plus bubble doors. Basically a
small Helio Courier.
It will have a 90 HP Corvair on it - direct drive. (140 HP derated)

Whoa!

The world must be a-changing.
1. A dog with average IQ wouldn't miss Dr. Zoom Campbell.
2. Never heard a bad word about Mr. Wier or is it Weir, until now.

I did spot Jim W's Cessa on the ramp at LXT a few months ago.
Seems he now is wifeless and has a younger lady friend replacement.

All I can say is...
Mr. W hasn't changed one ****in' biit, attitude wise.
Otherwise, he's showing his share of wear and tear, too.

Cheers.

What say you, Mr. Munday?
Been a while hasn't it?

Are you doing any flying?

My trusty ol' RV-3 is about to turn 1000... hours that is.
When that happens, could be that I'll hang it up.

Been flying glass-cockpit 182s for CAP. They're mighty nice. All the IFR stuff is a big change from the stick and rudder stuff I was doing back when.. On the other hand for a few years I was flying a lot more. I'll return to the stick and rudder end eventually. I really ought to stick an engine on the cassutt I bought for a song. I just need an O-200 for a song too. Saw one for sale a week or so ago.

Glad to hear you're still boring holes in the sky. Keep it up.

Didn't know you were doing CAP. I just got a squadron command. Finished
