View Full Version : Moriarty Winds

This from a friend at the airport:
Winds at 0E0 right now at 240 degrees, 31 gusting to 37 with flying
tumbleweeds, cats, dogs and coyotes......in haze and blowing dust. Bart is
now being blown eastward back to his home in Kentucky against his will. He,
however, will have to get past the tornadoes currently on the ground in
central Oklahoma....If he intersects them it may speed up his "flight" east
bound...

Tornado no problem just fly against the direction of rotation right? Which is negative ground speed btw.

Sounds like a perfectly normal wind for Moriarty!

Today's forecast is for 20-30 G 40. Ground handling is really the tough
part.

In what month do these winds abate?

The 29th of February is usually quite calm!

Winds are beginning to taper off. And it's a good thing with the contest
starting in about a week.

On my last flight, just a few days ago, winds at landing were about 40
degrees left at 19G29 making the crosswind runway useless. Fortunately our
runway is about 75 ft wide and we have a very large turnout so, if you carry
sufficient energy and you know how your brakes work, it's more exciting than
scarey. It helped a bit, too, that my left water dump valve was stuck (ice,
maybe) and that made keeping the left wing level against the wind pretty
simple until I came to a stop.

Wanna bet?

Nope! I towed again today. Only three gliders went up and, following the
last one, winds on landing were 280/22G31. Rwy 26 was in use. Getting the
Pawnee to behave while maneuvering to the tiedown is the fun part!
I hope to fly my LAK-17a tomorrow...

WA - and for what it's worth, I'll be telling lies about the weather officially for the duration of the contest.

Well, you won't actually be coming to New Mexico. That's in Texas or
Oklahoma now. You'll actually be coming to AZ, NV, or CA depending upon
winds for the next two days and what blows in.

SUNDAY!! At Moriarty International Speedway! SUNDAY! 15 Meters, Sports, 18 and Standard. The winds calm and the clouds return SUNDAY!
Take the second Moriarty exit to Martinez Road, and drive East to the airport entrace.
SUNDAY!
....Hopefully.

There were seven gliders lined up for launch when I finished my lunch so I
thought I'd push my glider out. By the time I was number three, the winds
were down the runway at 21 gusting 29 and there was dirt in the sky.
So I sez to myself, "Self, you're retured and you live here. You can fly
tomorrow." So I pushed it back to the hangar with the help of Richard from
Craggy Aero and gave him a demonstration of the carousel.
More gliders are arriving every day...
