If you look at the pilot registry, he's a private pilot. Duh? Qantas
Captain?

Besides a private pilot license, instrument rating and appropriate type
ratings, what else does he need? You don't need a commercial license or
ATP if you don't fly other people for hire, do you?

No, you don't, especially when it's one of your personal airplanes.

I heard John bought that 707 from Qantas. I'll bet it's fun to drive.

I was in Bermuda this past June and John's plane was at the airport parked
off in a corner. It's number was something like 707JT. Doors were all open
and there was laudry hanging from one of them..

Nothing. Except for the private pilot certificate, he does not need
any thing execpt a current medical to act as a co-pilot. He would
have to have a Flight Engineer's cert to sit at the sideways table in
the 707, but real pilots don' do that.

Nothing more, but don't you need a B707 type rating?

Nah! If you can afford the 707, a few more dollars with get it
equiped with a rated pilot.

More power to him. Here's the search find with one question - What
does the P/ mean on the type ratings?:

DOI : 09/04/2003
Certificate: PRIVATE PILOT

Rating(s):

PRIVATE PILOT
AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE LAND
AIRPLANE MULTIENGINE LAND
INSTRUMENT AIRPLANE

Type Ratings
P/CE-500 P/G-1159 P/HS-125 P/LR-JET

Limits
CE-500 (VFR ONLY).

Ah, well, I can only like the man. Anyone who can dance like that has
to be a first rate stick and rudder flyer.

The P is for Private Privileges, C is for Commercial and A is for ATP.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing
as simply messing around with airplanes.

Well Mike,....I spent 10 years as a US Naval Aviator, the last tour
included about 5 months of combat missions in the Vietnam theater of
operations. I then joined Pan American World Airways in 1967 where
I spent the next three years sitting sideways in B-707s. Not really
a bad job if you consider that it paid more than the Navy, much better
working conditions, and the sideways seat was a lot closer to the
pretty girls in the back. (Remember, this was 1967). Checked-out as
B-707 PIC in 1972.

BTW, Travolta need not restrict himself to SIC duties with his Private
Pilot Certificate, he is legal to operate as PIC with as many PAX as
the B-707 is certificated to carry.

How many carrier landings have you made?

If he wants to be PIC in the the 707 he may need an ATP. You'd have to
check the aircraft type certificates. Some require the PIC to be an
ATP.

BTW: Qantas said Travolta would be spending several months getting up
the standards to qualify as Captain. I assume that will give him his
ATP too. I'm sure Qantas 121 ticket requires all PICs to be ATP.

None that I know of. I have personally trained a few Commercial Pilots
for B-707 type ratings. They had G.I. Bill money to burn and didn't
have enough hours to qualify for an ATP.

A carport or so to park the 707 at home.
But he's got one - check this out:

You know, I don't think it would be too hard to land a C-172 on a
carrier. I can just hear the conversation...

"Cleared to land on any runway."

"Great, but you need to slow down a little for me to stick to the boat
(I'm ex-Air Force).

Mike Weller

Now a C-130 is a whole nuther thing.

John and family have the cover story in the latest Architectural Digest.
I'm not a big fan of the home's exterior design, but - with two jets
pulled up to it, I could learn to live with that.
