Oregon flyin vacation ideas

I may be able to pull away from everything next month for a week and
am considering flying North this time. Are there any good remoteish
type places up in Oregon where we could do hiking, fishing, etc? My
kids are 7 and 8 but we don't do the video game and TV thing so they'd
be happy to just do outdoor stuff. I'm in a Mooney so I can't really
do bush flying.:) I have a friend that lives in Grant's Pass if there
is anything near there.

I have a hard time thinking of any airfields in Oregon that do not have easy
access to hiking, fishing, etc. Well, maybe Portland International..... but
only maybe.

Consider Flying M Ranch near Yamhill, for example. Private ranch, sleep in
covered wagons. $12/night for a campsite. If the runway is too challenging,
land at Newberg or McMinnville and rent a car. The Spruce Goose is at
McMinnville.

Or Sun River. Huge resort area, with everything you could possibly want,
including a big paved runway.

Brookings. Climate like San Francisco. Big trees, ocean beaches.

Grants Pass itself is an outdoors paradise.

Gold Beach. Another good beach area.

I have also been to Bandon; there are a lot of good cabins and other
facilities available in the area.

You know, on second thought -- Oregon is crowded, rainy, obnoxious -- they
won't even let you pump your own gas. Yes. Um, there are no airports in
Oregon. No hiking or fishing, either. Just forget I said anything. That's
the ticket.

Crater Lake!!! Must see! Hike down to the lake, take the boat to Wizard
Island, climb to the top, get back on the boat, climb back to the rim.
Use a daypack. Wear a hat. Carry lots of water. Stay hydrated!!! Pack a
snacks and lunch. Carry hydration packs (2 or 3 liter) and a filter pump
to refill from the lake so you don't have to carry so much.The cabins in
the campground are nice or stay at the lodge. Fishing... the only rule is
you have to take out what you catch. My family went three years ago. My
kids were 7 and 9. They walked the whole time.

Gold Beach... jet boat up the Rogue River and back
Medford... Harry and David's tour
Bend... visit Lancair factory; great art in public places

All over the place.

However, if you insist on specifics :), I have to suggest Crater Lake. Good
hiking and spectacular views, toward and away from the crater (I guess it's
technically a caldera). Not too far from Grant's Pass, close enough to
drive, or you could fly in to Crescent Lake's airport and arrange
transportation to the park. The Klamath Falls area also has good outdoor
stuff. As long as you're in the vicinity, Lassen Volcanic National Park in
California's good too. Sort of a smaller, more accessible Yellowstone.

There is also the volcanic area just south of Bend. You can hike into a mile
long lava tube and back out. Cool and dry. Bring your own lantern(s)
flashlights or rent a lantern from the park. I recommend long pants and a
fleece jacket when down in the tube.

We like Newport. Good airport, with rental cars, and lots of things to do
and see.

They have a great aquarium. Smaller than the Monterey Bay, but still very
nice. They used to house the Free Willy whale there.

Down by Grants Pass there is something called the vortex. Cars roll up hill
and tall people lean to the left or something. The only weather information
is ASOS located at the top of a hill close by and 2000' up and the airports
in a weird kind of valley so check the winds when you get there. (Advice
from my DE during the checkride.)

Oregon's mostly the same everywhere I'd go some place interesting and dry
like Mexico or something. :)

My favorite Oregon place is any weekend at Flightcraft, PDX. They will rent
you a car for $25. Then take your kids up the Columbia River Highway, on the
old parts as much as possible.

Stop at Eagle Creek. It is a wonderful hike up slowly rising terrain. Never
does get steep(good for old and young legs.) Or go across the Bridge of the
Gods, and climb up Beacon Rock.
