Flying @ East Coast for a weekend

All,

Currently I am in the USA for work for a couple of weeks. A year ago I started to take glider lessons in the Netherlands. During the weekend I would like to have some lessons at the east coast.

Are you aware of any gliding clubs that offer lessons during the weekend for outsiders?

There are many great clubs of different sizes. Check out ssa.org for a comprehensive list.

If you just show up for a few weeks and expect to fly, see if they give you a temporary membership. However, this is not how clubs typically operate.

Unlike in Europe, there are a number of commercial gliding sites where you can usually just show up and get a tow or take some lessons without having to wash the glider (but you'll pay three times as much for a flight compared to flying as a regular member at a club).

On the East coast, my local site (Ridge Soaring Gliderport) has excellent conditions and relatively reliable lift in the summer (and ridge lift on many days). It is located in central Pennsylvania, about 3-4 hours from NYC.

Not sure where on the "east coast" you will be. But, if you are close to NYC give Yards Creek Soaring (YCS) a call (. They are a commercial operation that offers glider lessons without requiring being part of a club (even though there is a very active club on site as well called ACA). Weather permitting, YCS usually operates 7 days a week (which is very exceptional for any operation in the area). Spring and fall are usally best weather for soaring and lately we have had farly poor conditions but that can change withing days!
