View Full Version : GoPro camera editing and stiching of files.

I recently picked up a gopro3 camera before I
left on a soaring vacation to Minden.

I did not have time to make a mount but I have quite
a few clips of hand holding the camera for 30-60 seconds
at a time and I would like to stich these together so it
will play as one video instead of 20 or more individual videos.

What software should I use? The gopro software or is there
something better/easier?

Next question formats, the gopro saves video in 3 formats, .THM, .LRV, and .MP4.

The .MP4 is the only one that plays on my computer, should I just
delete the other 2 formats of videos or is there a specific
purpose for the .THM and .LRV formats?

Thanks for any advice,

Joe Simmers EZ

There are several very good inexpensive editing programs available that work well,CyberLink VideoDirector is inexpensive, easy and will do anything you would probably want. Of the four that I have tried and used successfully, I prefer Magix Movie Edit Pro. Most companies allow for free trial downloads while you are deciding what will work best for you. Also, programs are promoted for their large number of fades, transitions and special effects that are sort of useless for good video editing, there is much overkill that is not used. Simple is better-I think.

If you have a Windows computer, you can use Windows Live Movie Maker. It's standard with Windows, as far as I know. Not very advanced, but enough for simple editing.

THM and LRV filess probably are files with details about the recordings, the only real video file is MP4 format.

It appears I may have to change the format in gopro cineform software (to a larger uncompressed file)

Then after that I can use windows movie maker etc.

Is this what others are doing? Or are you just using the raw gopro file
and opening directly with movie maker etc.?

Movie maker should handle the raw files from a gopro. Unless you have a version that is several years old, in which case you will have to download codecs(pia sometimes) or convert the raw footage(I suggest handbrake freeware..) Best bet is getting a newish version of Movie maker. Converting everything just to cut most of it is time consuming, and codec hunting can be frustrating. Pro tip put in short nonflying bits, rigging, butterflies, people- if anybody looks at the footage years down the road people are the only thing they will care about. and cut the crap out of the footage, then cut again and again, when you don't think it can be any shorter cut it twice more.. Your family and friends will thank you.

And, don't speed up/slow down the footage or use crappy music. I some times
want to throw my laptop across the room at some of the "Swamp People"
wanna-be editing.

Dan,

You have a problem with using Gwar tunes for soaring soundtracks?

Just buy a Mac. Revel in i-Movie.
I tried all the other stuff.
i-Movie was made for the average person trying to be creative.
It works intuitively.

GoPro just released its own editing software. It's FREE.

Yeah, Mike, that's kinda the sort of music(?) I was thinking of.

And looking at a lot of the speed up/slow down cuts in soaring videos, I
think I'll start joining thermals that way and see how the other pilots like
it...

I respectfully disagree. Speeding up the footage from HD sports cameras is a great potential training aid. It allows newer pilots to virtually ride along and learn about geography, tactics, weather, etc. from more experienced pilots.

Below are sped up videos from the Balleka channel. Just as I don't choose to watch SeeYou replays at 1X speed, I don’t have the patience or time to study these videos in real time. And for the same time investment, I learn more.

As far as musical choice, I imagine the preference is generational. There is always the option to mute YouTube and throw on a vinyl record :)

I think Balleka has some of the best soaring videos on YouTube. This is my favorite, although I do not think speeding up the footage was of any benefit and is sort of hard to focus on in this example.

Ditch the music completely, and give us the sound of flight.

If one doesn't like that, then they can mute the computer and
play good music.

You have a point, but I must disagree with it. If the video is presented at
1X, I can choose to speed it up or simply skip ahead. When it constantly
changes speed, I find it distracting to the point of not watching. Besides,
it presents an unrealistic image of soaring to the prospective convert. And
yes, I know where the mute button is and I use it constantly.

Could you learn from a book if someone held it in front of you and flipped
the pages back and forth, quickly and slowly, in accordance with his opinion
of what you want to see rather than handing it to you and letting you flip
through at your leisure and pause and skip where you want?
