He's shooting for the 'X' prize in competition with Rutan and others.
A controlled rocket to exceed the 62 miles or so and a controled
landing by the rocket,
This may net be exactally right but gives you a clue and might be an
interesting project to watch.
Am told through a frind who's son is a good frined ot the guy in
question he made his millions writing computer games and so far in his
life has never been stumped so is going balls out on his project.
I'm not the expert on this so expect others who know of and have
followed the project to chime in with more data along along with some
of our flat earth guys who just want to poo paa the whole project.
Since it's a vehicle that will be flown by a pilot, even into space,
quess it is OT????? So many of my posts aren't or not very close :o)

Its an X-Prize entry. Looks like thay have a little work to do to catch
up with Scaled Composites. But at least they're having fun!

It's supposed to get to 100km twice in 2 weeks with only 10% of the
non-fuel part of the vehicle being replaced between flights. If it is
the first to succeed they win the $10m X Prize.
In reality, I think if Scaled Composites doesn't beat them (or if they
keep going after Scaled wins the prize) the vehicle is going to end up
killing someone. Carmack is trying to design hardware with a computer
programming mentality. He expects things that work once to keep working.
He expects things that are fixed once to stay fixed. I thought they had
a reasonable chance of survival when the plan was to return to earth
under parachute (although their first small-scale powered launch would
have been fatal even with a parachute, since the failed power connection
led to a low-altitude abort too low for a parachute recovery). But due
to range safety considerations (the need too keep the landing circle
small) they are opting for a powered landing.

Go to Google and look up "Armadillo Aerospace" and/or "Black
Armadillo". These will get you started on finding out about this
project.
Some short shift.
1. After fuel burn out on take off, a small drogue chute deploys
(above the majority of atmosphere where there is little or no drag).
2. After reaching max altitude and starting back down the small chute
helps point the nose down (lawn dart style).
3. At some altitude the main chute comes out of rear of vehicle and
rocket descends under it nose down.
4. On ground impact, the nose cone is crushed absorbing the energy of
ground impact and stopping the descent and vehicle falls over on it's
side.
5. For next flight, a new nose cone is installed and vehicle refueled
and is ready to go.
That's what the good book says :o)

I think that was the first version of the Black Armadillo. This second
one is much scarier.
