Damn, snagged a bird.

Is it really worth the effort of pulling one out? Is it at all reuseable?

Probly just to prevent the environmental hazard, see that oil slick on the
water?

Hell, the thing looks barely damaged.

If that was fresh water (as in the Great Lakes), it looks like you could dry
it out and fly it home.

I'll never forget the day they fished out our school's Seminole from Lake
Hopatcong (since known as Lake Seminole)

They've still no multi there, presumably for insurance reasons.

I did mine in Seneca that we had (with Oscar), and that was at least a year
after the Seminole incident.

Bummer!

So what the heck happened in this incident or did I miss the "probable
cause" part of the report?

I'm presuming that both CFIs somehow didn't notice the fuel selector was set
between "off" and "crossfeed" and was actually stopping fuel flow?

Yes. Hose everything down ASAP. Then take it apart at your leisure and hose it down
some more. Send the engine and prop out for major. Replace all the instruments. There
are some other items.

About 10 years ago, a Birddog went down just off the Jersey shore. He was towing a
banner, lost a bit of power, and couldn't ditch the banner. When the banner hit the
sea, it sorta slapped the Birddog down. They dragged it out, the insurance company
totalled it, and Pete Kupper got the rebuild contract. I saw it at Kupper. They had
to replace the wings, the gauges, and all the avionics, plus send the engine and prop
out (Mattituck redid the engine). It was worth it.

I've seen worse than that from an outboard motor.

Do you usually fish with 3,000 pound test line?

Not usually but OTOH I'd settle for catching a 152 or even a Super Cub. :>
