This year's OSH NOTAM is now available for downloading from the EAA
website.
Also, they have stolen Col Weir's windscreen card idea, and are making
the various IFR/VFR/camping signs available for download.

Arrival flows are not color coded but rather named after arrival direction
(Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, Northeast). I'm sure there are other
changes but it's not like I'm comparing word for word to last year. Then
again, we're headed to Fon du Lac this year so arriving won't be quite the
rush it was last year.

Cool picture on the front...too bad we can't see the location of camp Honeck
though :-( Kind of fun to find the bathrooms, count three rows to the West,
point to the middle of the row and think "That's where we were".

In a word, housing. Staying at Marion College this year. I know, I
know...we're wimps. Real pilots camp at OSH, right? :-) Given that Dad is
coming with us this year though, we thought he'd be more comfortable in the
dorms. Heck, we even paid the extra $5/day for A/C (yes, now we're really
truly wimps...). I will miss camping at OSH though. There's nothing quite
like the rain/wind/lightning/sleeping in the plane/always having something
wet to dry out/daily runs to the Pigly Wigly/etc.

Wow, you fly clear across the country, only to stop short of OSH -- and
sleep in a dorm room?

Ewhhhh!!!

Hey -- now THAT would be cool. Sleeping in a deluxe aviation theme suite,
lounging in your jacuzzi after a long day on the flight line, wouldn't be
too hard to take.

But you'd better have a fast plane.

But a *dorm*? Yuck.

Ya, some people do the darndest things, don't they? Especially (borrowing a
term from Jim W.) us left coasters. I know Jay, there's no valid excuse. I
throw myself at the mercy of the official OSH beer pooh-bah and beg
forgiveness. Er, in other words, I guess this means I need to bring extra
"good beer" to the official gathering.

If you're referring to the annual gathering at Jay and Mary's campsite Eric,
oh no...I wouldn't miss that. Planning on being there until the shuttle
busses quit running.

Speaking of shuttle busses to the various dorms, anyone remember the hours
of operation they ran last year?

I think they ran until 10 PM last year.

However, if Greg Burkhart drives in again this year, you could probably
sleep in his Miata... ;-)

(He did, one night! I don't know how he could walk the next day...)

I remember the story. Hmmm, I've ridden in a Miata, can't imagine trying
to sleep in one. Not exactly built for someone 6 ft. tall.

Cool!

Maybe we should fly in as a flight of three (Brian and Christine are coming
in their Warrior, I think), so that we can camp close to each other?

How fast can the Ercoupe go?

Not very fast -- maybe I should leave now... ;-)

Lately it has been cruising about 95-100mph so you'll have to give me a head
start. I'll have to see if I'm up to flying into OSH...

Well, you'll have no troubles hitting that 80 knot target speed... :-)

Re: Being "up to" flying into OSH. If you can maintain 80 knots (and it
sounds like the Ercoupe basically cruises a bit faster than that), all you
really have to do is:

1) Follow the NOTAM'd procedure, which is rock simple ("Follow the railroad
tracks to the water tower...")
2) Maintain spacing on the guy ahead of you

The arrival procedure is designed to be flown by relatively inexperienced
G.A. pilots. Thousands of pilots have flown into OSH without incident.
You can, too.

Hey, we slept a few hours in the 172 last year...was the only thing really
water proof during the late night downpour one evening. I don't know
Greg...Miata or Ercoupe...tough choice on which I'd rather sleep in. No
brainer on which one I'd rather take to OSH.

Just about the correct side of the power curve for you to fly
in formation Jay?

I don't know. I have a hard time flying as a flight of two with our old
Warrior (you met the new owner, Brian). I have to be flying at 20 inches
and 2000 RPM, and he has to be balls to the wall.

To fly formation with the Ercoupe would mean flying about 86 knots. I
suppose it could work out, but I'm not sure how well?

You're kidding right? I fly loose formations with Cubs all the time. We
indicate about 90 mph. Put some flaps down and you should be able to fly at
pretty much any speed he can.

Guys!!!!!
Formation flying is not one of those "do-it-yourself" instruction
things.
Formation flying with the same type (similar) aircraft is one thing,
formation flying with different (dissimilar) aircraft is asking for
trouble.
The pilot of the lead aircraft has to know how to lead, the wingmen
have to know how to stack, hold position and not get sucked into the
aircraft they are guiding on.

We're not talking about wingtip to wingtip here. We're talking about
anything from about 200 feet apart to a half mile.

Google
