Hello community,

has anybody experience with the above mentioned unit? Especially map-detail
(compared to e.g. Garmin or Lowrance) and quaility of screen (sunlight
readability) is of interest for me.

Hello Kai,

Several of us here have the AvMap EKP IIC (I think that's what it's called
in "real" life -- most of us just call it the "AvMap"). It's an awesome
flight instrument.

I've not heard of the "NT" -- is that a typo, or something new?

Jay,

that's the fancy colour-display unit...

that's the not-so-fancy black-and-white unit. It's cheaper (appr. 50%) und
seems to be closer to the original Magellan EC 10/20X.

Well, if it can do everything the color version can do, it would still be a
great unit.

However, it's the huge color screen that makes the AvMap such a terrific
device. Having lived with a grayscale Lowrance for several years, I was
amazed at how much more clearly information could be imparted in color.
Instead of having to stare at the screen, trying to interpret what you're
seeing, it's more of a "glance and go" thing with color.

Of course, it may have something to do with the screen being 3 or 4 times
bigger, too...

Jay,

How do you get your Jepp-data updated (if you get it ;-)?

If you mean the internal database, I only update it annually.

You can contract for updates more often, of course.

I went for the $500.00 upgrade. It now recycles so fast you would hardly notice
it.
Best investment I ever made, would not leave home without it.

I update it 3 times a year. Never know when frequency is changed.

upGRADE, not upDATE.

My guess is a better machine, than the cheaper, older one.

Well, this will be my first update coming up (at OSH '04), so I'll let you
know then. I'm assuming it's a new data chip (like Lowrance) or perhaps an
upload?

I'm sure their website addresses this somewhere.

They will send a new data card, Take the old one out, put new one in.
Word of caution. Test the GPS with the new card for several days before
returning it to AvMap.
