Okay, there must be someone out there using the Lowrance Airmap 1000. What do
you think of it? Better yet if you can compare it to the Garmin 196. The
asswipes in sci.geo.sat-nav don't want to talk about it.

thanks,

I bought one back in March. I posted a pirep on it shortly
thereafter. You should be able to Google it up. I flew a long
x-country to Sedona / Grand Canyon and am still impressed with it. It
does not have the terrain warning features that the new Garmin has.
This was a replacement for my Airmap 100 and I liked it as well but
never had to seek service. Some members of the newsgroup haven't been
happy with Lowrance's service. There are better units out there but
for the money I still think it is a good deal and would buy it again.

Hi Tom..

We have had ours for 3 mos. now, and are VERY happy
campers..(well pilots) :)

Love the big screen, display is sharp and clear.

Runway extensions are a feature (lacking in the G 196
according to posters here, but I have not verified)

It eats batteries with the screen lighting on, so for night
operation you should have it plugged in to the lighter socket (cord is
supplied)

Comes with a GREAT manual, an EXCELLENT yoke mount, sits
nicely on the yoke pad in our 172, and have had no issues with it's
features/operation in any way so far....

We are happy with the features/$ ratio and I think some others
here may seriously consider one after seeing ours.

We looked at the G 196, contemplated waiting for the colour
version, but the more we compared, the AM 1000 seemed to be the better
value for us, and the early experience seems to validate our
selection..

IMHO, a good product that is meeting (and exceeding) our
expectations..
