View Full Version : Tony Condon Downwind Dash
Steve Leonard[_2_]
April 8th 14, 07:10 PM
Tony Condon is on a downwind dash from Wellington, KS. Last I heard, goal was somewhere in Texas. Cloud base should be pushing 7000 AGL, and tailwinds in excess of 30 knots. B/S ratio forecast is pretty low, but I have flown on similar sorts of days and found the lift to be very good. Will see how it turns out for him!
Feel free to spend the rest of your afternoon watching his progress instead of working.

Very nice! By the trajectory, he could make Arkansas!

Looks like he has Paris Texas made. Averaging better than 80mph from start.

Does anyone know if he'll go for further than TX? Minden, LA would be cool...

He's in TX!

Goal had been San Augustine, Texas. Lots of pine trees between Paris and San Augustine. If he gets to San Augustine, that will be about 440 miles and a new Distance to a Goal record (taking my 423 mile record).

Through the window, a very nice looking afternoon.
Most of the people I work with were complaining about our landings in Dallas (B737) and Tulsa (B757) today. Looks and felt to me like Tony chose a great day to fly. He could make San Augustine.

I hope he does. Records are made to be broken. Will give me somthing else to shoot for this summer!
These are the kinds of days we watch for. And as usual, they happen during the week.

Thanks. I am just sorry I didn't notice sooner that another buddy, Bob Holliday, was out on a free distance run, too. Check other thread for his SPOT and progress. I think he is in his PIK, but oculd be in his his ASG, as he has a towplane. Currently, KSA towplanes are both down. :-(

I think Tony saw that Newton is 490 miles out of Wellington, so he wants to go a little further. If he had good altitude, with the tailwind, a 60 mile final glide is not out of the question.

Just got word that Tony made it to DeQuincy, LA. Seems that he missed TX

Hey Tony . . . Nice flight! I love old-fashioned straight-outs with a crew trying to keep up!
Next, try to fly from Wichita to Marfa. Maybe head southwest then contact the Marfa dry line and fly south.
Just need to hop over the Davis Mountains to the Marfa Plateau (5,000' msl.)
Steve Leonard got close last year with his flight to Pecos.
Just let me know you're on your way so I can lay out the red carpet.

I make that about 850km wind assisted. Nice flight. We cant do that sort of
thing in the uk, the landmass isnt big enough!
I pitty the poor retrieve crew - he is probably still driving.
Well done.

Uh Tony...How much longer do you have to be able to upload to the OLC and the flight still be valid? Can't wait to see the trace! :)

Forget those little "13.1" and "26.2" decals the half-marathon and marathon finishers put on the vehicles - You Kansas boys can put on some really big numbers!
"4-5-5, what's that?"
"Flew a sailplane 455 miles without an engine."
Silence.

So...didja suffer from oxygen poisoning way down there at sea level? Partake
of any jambalaya or shrimp gumbo while waiting for your crew? How about
Alligator McNuggets? Too bad you couldn't'a made Lake Charles - think how it
woulda enhanced your story: "I flew 550 miles without an engine...and then
landed in Lake Charles!" ("How'd you get the glider out of the lake?!?"
exclaims the impressed babe.)
Way to go, dood!!!

Thanks Bob! No jambalaya but I did have some popeyes fries chicken while sitting in a cheap motel. Does that count?
It would've been really cool to have seen open water but the situation just didn't allow for making it the last 25 miles. Next time.

My story is now up on my SSA Blog: http://www.ssa.org/MyHome.asp?mbr=8292935490&show=blog
and should be up on Soaring Cafe in the next day or two. Look for an article in an upcoming Soaring about this downwind dash season.
I get "The system cannot find the file specified" when I click on the link
in the post. I assume this is because I'm logged in as me, not you.
