I know some pannel mount GSP units have VOR capability (not sure if
its internal or interfaces with transiever). Anyway people make
portable transceivers with VOR, and portable GPS units with VOR
databases but I have yet to see a GPS unit that does VOR. I would
think it would be pretty easy to integrate a transceiver into a
portable GPS. Does anyone make such a beast? I dont care if it ends
up being twice as big.

Unless you can plug it into the ship's VOR antenna, the reception will
stink. Why would you want such a thing anyway ? Use the VOR receiver in
the airplane if the handheld GPS fails to operate.

It could be done.. but the question is WHY? Who would want to buy such a
thing (besides you)? I doubt there is enough of a market to make such a
device worth the production cost. You can't use a portable device for
legal IFR, whereas the panel mount devices can be...

Garmin used to make a GPS with comm capability, but it was not popular and
it is no longer available. It would have been a simple matter to add VOR.

I'm not aware of any integrated product. However, there is a
solution. If you don't care if it is twice as big, then just buy two
devices. One is a handheld GPS. The other is a Sporty's JD-200 VHF
Transceiver. It is a nav/comm radio, so incorporates the VOR
capability for you.
