SAN to OSH route?

I'm planning on flying a 172 RG from San Diego to OSH for the big show at the end of July.

Any thoughts from others that have made the trip?

I'm IFR rated, but with the summer time T-Storms the trip is probably the same IFR or VFR.

Roughly PHX -> ABQ, then your choice going NW. Leave early in the morning
(like sunup) and catch a nice SW tailwind. Cheap fuel in St. Johns, AZ and
at Colorado Aviation at COS.

Definitely leave early, if you can. Here in Vegas towards the
middle of the day to late afternoon, we (LAS, PRC, PHX area) catch the
monsoonal winds coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, which will give you
some weird headwinds throughout the southwest.

If you head up to COS, I would suggest (depending on what bird
you're flying) fly up along the J146 route to LNK or OMA. This will
keep you away from Kansas City Class B, plus there being cheap fuel in
the Omaha/Lincoln area. J60 over to DSM, then up and you're there.

Be sure to plan a last stop near to OSH to refuel and get yourself organized to
fly into the worlds busiest airport. There have been accidents because pilots
have run out of fuel in the pattern. Be sure and read the arrival NOTAM ahead
of time to familiarize with what is required to fly into OSH. It is available
on the EAA web site.

Here's what I'd do, with minor changes to look for cheap fuel...

SAN SHADI E25 LVS GCK AFK OSH

SHADI to miss a restricted area, LVS to get through the
Continental Divide at one of it's lower points.
Legs vary from 2 hours to a little over 3 hours, your
times/speeds may vary. There are some TFR's
currently on that route, so beware, lots of fires burning
and more to come I'm sure.

If the leg between E25 and LVS is too long, there are
lots of airports on the way, Taylor, St. Johns, Zuni,
Grants, ABQ-Double Eagle.

Total mileage about 1,540nm one way.
Great Circle direct 1,496.

a left 45°.

Actually planning on going into Appleton.

My dad (who taught me to fly 25 years ago) has always talked about crossing the country
in a light plane. So I'm taking him on a low and slow trip to OSH.
I've got a hotel room in appleton, so I plan to stay there to avoid the "Worlds busyiest airport."
Still expecting it to be busy, but not as busy.

I recommend the last fuel/weather stop at Portage, WI.
Great FBO, brats on the field, you can discuss OSH
arrival plans with others while on the ground... and follow
them into OSH!

You might consider the NORTH route... Salt Lake City,
Cheyenne, Iowa City Iowa, Portage Wis, Appleton.

Then you can go to Jay's Party!
