Amphibian down on Mt Kearsarge

My wife told me about a single engine amphibian that crashed Monday
with one (of two occupants aboard) fatalities. A man and his son were
in the airplane. The father was able to call 911 with his cell phone
after the crash. Rescuers had a hard time finding the crash due to
the extremely dense fog in the area. The father was alert enough to
blow on a whistle, which the rescuers homed in on. He is seriously
injured, his 17 year old son was dead at the scene.

The flight originated from Lebanon NH Airport and was headed for
Concord NH.

Monday, at least where I was in eastern central Vermont not far from
Lebanon, was a day of extremely low ceilings (below the hilltops) and
intermittant rain, with dense fog at times and mist. It appears that
it was at least somewhat the same at the scene of the crash.

Sorry, I know nothing about the pilot, whether he was IFR rated or
not. There is some question about who was flying at the time of the
crash. I just know that the visibility was so bad that day that I
would not have wanted to be flying for any reason.

I was planning on flying up there but cancelled due to the conditions. I am
very sorry to hear of this tragic accident. I can't even begin to imagine
the hell the father is going through now.

The best use for your old cell phone is to keep it charged and leave
it in the flight bag,

911 works on any cell phone, regardless of who it belongs to and what
provider used to service it.
