View Full Version : Flying to Reno this year?

We're considering it, but have never attended the air races before.

Anyone going? Any words of advice -- must-sees?

Ah, you may make it out to the left coast I see...good for you.
Warning...don't be scared by all those pretty colors on the sectionals :-)

I've only been once (year before last) and it was great. We had the
full meal deal in terms of access to everything and it was a lot of fun
wandering the pit area. Of course, we also had access to the United
Airlines seating area via a friend of the family...so, had primo seating
(a bit closer than the regular bleachers, had the L-39's parked right in
front of us).

Wish I could offer more in terms of "must-see" stuff but having only
been once, am a Reno novice.

Hadn't thought of going this year...but heck Jay, if you're going to be
in our neck of the woods, I just might wander over the hills...um, er,
Sierra's. My home field is about an hour by air from Stead.

Where you planning on flying into and planning to stay?

Dunno yet. We're sitting down with Brian & Christine (our friends who
bought our Warrior) in an hour or so to discuss possibilities. It seems
there are a fair number of local folks we know who are interested in going
to Reno this year!

I suspect if we really want to make it, we'll have to fly commercial.
Although if we can get enough guys together, we might just charter a King
Air or sumpin'...

I'll let you know!

I have driven down from Oregon several times but have not flown down. The
pilot of one of the T6's flies out of my home field and said that the ONLY
way to get a spot to park if you fly in is to call ahead and reserve a
parking spot with one of the FBOs. As far as the event itself... what an
event! It's the only place to see and hear race built aircraft engines
being pushed to their limits and watch aircraft shoot by show center at 450+
Also, be sure to get the pit passes, there is a lot going on and most or the
crews are quite friendly. Hmmm, I think I might have just talked myself
into going again this year.

Hi Jay,

I grew up in Reno, and live in Minden now.
I'm probably going to drive up (45 min drive).
I just got my pilot's license a couple of months ago, and was transplanted
to CA for a few years until recently, so this will be the first time I
actually make it to the races.
If you're coming out, you have to go to Tahoe. You can easily kill a day
(or more) there.
I'm not big on casinos (most locals aren't), but there's usually a ton of
entertainment/shows/etc.
If you want a bit slower pace, come down to KMEV, and have lunch at the Tail
Dragger ;-)

Thanks for the tips, Adam! (Congrats on getting your PPC, by the way...)

Thanks for the invite, Jim!

I have no idea how this is going to pan out, as we're still in the early
planning stages. (Hell, we're short help at the inn now, and I've got
contractors working on the balconies, and a crew re-facing the south side of
the airport building, and a zillion other irons in the fire...)

But if we can pull it off, we'll be sure to hitch up with you guys somehow!

Turn in your certificate and airplane keys. NOW.

Oh, fer corn sake, Jay. Atlas cruises at about 150 knots, doesn't he? That's a
moderate full day's flight from Iowa City to Reno. And, as I said, Reno DOES
get busy during that week. Grass Valley (80 miles or so to the west) has a lot
of parking AND you can use the Chevy from Jim & Gail for a week if you wish.

Besides, I've got the only autogas trailer in Northern California that I know
of.

I know, I know. It's awful. But we've already been gone 50% more this
summer than last, and we simply can't afford to not be at the inn duing the
busy season.

Between that, and school for the kids (my son is adamant that he not miss
any, so early in the semester), I suspect we'll be going commercial or not
at all .

Actually, I'm working on getting enough folks together so we can charter one
of our FBO's King Airs.

I'm sold, Jim. You know I'd be in the air tomorrow, if it were just me.

It's all these other danged distractions (work, family, school) that are
getting in my way!

I'll keep working on it.
