Does anyone know if there are excel spreadsheets or other computer
programs that help with pre-flight planing?

Take a look at WingX for the Pocket PC at:

http://www.hiltonsoftware.com

or

http://www.kingschools.com/wingx

WingX is a Pocket PC application - this is great for doing W&B, looking up
FARs, doing route planning while down at the airport and/or on a trip. The
list of over 300 supported aircraft models can be found at:
http://www.hiltonsoftware.com/FAQ.html. More than 20,000 airports,
includeing private airports, intersections and fixes, the FARs are included.

Some users' comments:

"You guys are awesome. Intersections are a great addition as I fly IFR much
of my flying time. Thanks again!"

"Great piece of software. Unbelievably intuitive. A real pleasure to use,
and very user friendly."

"What a great platform, and great foundation that you have with this
software. I am a flight instructor and have been looking for a great piece
of software to run on my IPAQ. I also do a lot of contract flying around
the country. You guys are for sure on the right track with things. Can't
wait for the next version update!"

"You folks have been most helpful with this new software. I have been
looking for this type of software for my new iPAQ to take over for the same
software that I have used on my old Handspring Palm for several years."

Disclaimer: I kinda have a stake in the company. ;) We're always looking
for ways to improve WingX - please email great experiences and/or product
suggestions/questions to - thanks!

P.S.: Sorry for the plug, but you did ask. :)

Try this simple one. It does the density altitude, wind triangle, etc. for
you. Use it with the usual "as-is", "if you hit a mountain, it ain't my
fault.", "check and verify", caveats.

I'm putting it on our club server that I'm the webmaster for but this is my
own spreadsheet.
