Planning to go x-country in the US May next year. Routing will be (roughly):
Houston - Chicago - Bangor - Jacksonville - Houston. Any airports along the
way we should visit besides for refueling? Please advise. Thanks.

I'm assuming you mean Bangor, ME. If so, you want to
stop at Bar Harbor, ME(BIB). Great place to visit.
It's about 30 miles southeast of Bangor, ME.

Between Chicago and Bar Harbor...
USAF Museum, Dayton Ohio.
Use Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport (KSGH)

If you're going to stop at museums, on the way from Bangor
to Jacksonville, stop at Dulles, VA(IAD) and check out
the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space museum.

In Jacksonville, you will likely end up at Craig Field (CRG; depending on
where the people you are visiting live). It's about halfway between the
city itself and the beach. While arriving or departing, though, you might
consider a quick visit to Cecil Field. It's not in the most convenient
location for visiting Jacksonville, but it's an recently-closed Naval Air
Station with 3 enormous runways and 1 really enormous one.

For Chicago. If you are just passing through and need a fuel stop, I
would recommend Morris, C09 (about 45 nm SW of the city). Morris has
good fuel and a good restaurant.

If you are looking to visit downtown Chicago. Your best bet is
Chicago-Midway. Make sure to call ahead to make parking arrangements
with the FBO. Take the Orange line El Train downtown.

If you are looking for a place to overnight with your plane. Grand
Geneva Resort and Spa. C02. Airport is on the resort property.
Great restaurants and golf courses.

This is a bit out of the way, as it is 57nm NW of Chicago (and I'm
assuming you don't want to hop Lake Michigan on the way to Maine).

On the way to Maine, consider stopping at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome near Red
Hook, NY. Catch a WW I aircraft airshow. Check for showtimes.

FWIW, I've seen vee tail Bonanzas land on the Aerodrome airstrip, but I
wouldn't put my Mooney on it, I used Red Hook and took a cab.

Recommend a stop at Cleveland's Burke Lakefront airport, a very
nice downtown airport on the shore of Lake Erie, similar to the
now-closed Meigs Field in Chicago.

Happy landings,

Bangor as in Maine? That's quite a dog-leg!

If you are in Maine, you might visit Wiscassett. A lovely town and a
nice FBO called Wicked Good Aviation. (I'm particularly fond of the
FBO because the lady does props, which is a dying art in America.)

A wonderful museum, and an excellent piece of advice.

He'll have to take a taxi(cab) from the airport to the museum. Lots of
motels in the area: U-H is worth an overnight. See
www.warbirdforum.com/udvarhaz.htm for my impressions.

I second that. The airport is very nice, it's fun to fly in and there
are things to do within walking distance. The Rock 'n Roll Hall of
Fame and the Science Center are just down the street. Good downtown
hotels also close-by.

Depending on the time of year you are planning your trip, a visit to
Sandusky, OH is also a fun thing to do. There are shuttle vans
available at nominal charge to take you from the airport to Cedar
Point, which is one of the largest/best roller coaster parks in the
world.

If you are looking for a bit of pampering (with prices to match the
word "pampering"), Nemacolin Woodlands in Western PA is a fabulous
resort with a large landing strip adjacent to the hotel. Excellent
spa, fabulous accomadations, golf, etc etc are all on the menu there.
Nice Sunday brunch, but be sure to reserve in advance.

Have fun!

Katama field on Martha's Vineyard (1B2) is always worth a stop and can
probably be worked into the Maine-Florida leg pretty easily. It's one of the
largest and best-maintained grass strips in the country with a 4500' main
runway that can handle anything smaller than a citation. May would be a
great time to be on the Vineyard since everything will probably be open but
the tourist crush won't have begun in earnest. If you want to spend a bit
more time you could also make the run out to ACK.

From Chicago, Kalamazoo, MI is only an hour east. Stop in at the Air Zoo on the
AZO airport. You won't regret it.
