View Full Version : Flying to Toronto, ON, next Friday - Need advice
Peter R.

I need to fly up to Toronto from NY State next Friday AM for a day-long
business meeting. This will be my first flight into Canada so I am
reviewing the AOPA Canadian/US flight requirements, however I do need
some local advice.
The business meeting is located at a hotel near Pearson International
Airport, but I was told that flying into Toronto/City Centre airport is
much more practical for GA aircraft. Is this true? If so, what would
be the best way to get to a hotel near Pearson, cab or shuttle?
Also, is there a contact number for the FBO at this airport? I tried
searching the web, but I was unable to locate an AirNav.com equivalent
for Canadian airports.

I can't help with the hotel info near Pearson, but I have
flown into City Centre. This is a great airport to fly into
when going to Toronto. It's right in Toronto and you take
a cool little ferry about 1 minute to get to the "mainland". ; )
I suggest going to a pilot shop and grabbing the Canadian
Supplement book(I think it's called). It lists all the FBO's
and their info. I can look up the number in my old book
if you'd like. I've never flown into Pearson, but everyone
I know that has says it's a hassle and they don't care for
small planes.

I have flown into Pearson on commercial flights many times. I don't
think I have ever seen a non-jet GA plane on the tarmack. I suspect
that flying a GA plane to YYZ is roughly equivalent to flying a GA
plane to JFK.

Both work I'm sure -- depends on how much you want to spend. A cab is
probably much faster and more convenient, but will cost more. If you
are arriving during rush hour be prepared to spend a long time sitting
in traffic on the Gardner Expressway and Highway 427...

Hopefully, someone more qualified than I can provide some more information,
but here are some resources that will have FBO numbers, etc., to get you
started:
Toronto/Pearson International CYYZ:
http://www.gtaa.com/ This is the Airline hub, so yes, they probably frown
on GA traffic, although their "facts and figures" page:
http://www.gtaa.com/Index.aspx?Sid=Node7/Node7.4&Tpl=1
boasts "two GA areas..." "involved in operations....corporate and private
aircraft...".
One thing that Pearson requires is an "arrival-departure reservation" in
advance.
No doubt the landing fees are atrocious.
Toronto/City Centre CYTZ:
http://www.torontoport.com/airport.asp
As already described, this is a waterfront airport close to the business
centre of the city, and probably about 10 air-miles from your hotel, so
figure maybe 12-15 ground miles.
Toronto/Buttonville CYKZ:
http://www.torontoairways.com
This is to the northeast of the city, but is near a convenient freeway that
can get you to the Pearson hotel strip fairly quickly. Probably about 15-20
ground miles. Its an automated toll highway, and I don't know what
arrangements there are for the Car-rental companies collecting the tolls.
(toll would be about 8-12 dollars one way, if the car does not have a
transponder, somewhat less if it does (I am guessing)).

If you have a city name (Toronto) and an airport name(City Centre) and throw
in the word "airport", a google search on something like:
airport Toronto City Centre
should get you some good hits. Even without the actual airport name, just
airport Toronto
airport Calgary
....
etc.
you will still probably get a hit in the first few pages that will have an
FBO number.

You are correct that Pearson is not suitable for GA airplanes. City
Center is very conveniently located to downtown. You take a short ferry
and are you in the heart of downtown. The subway does not run to the
Pearon airport. But you should be able to take the subway to a stop
closer to the airport and then take a taxi. A taxi ride from city center
to Pearson would be about $40 or $50. Here is a link to the airport
facilities: http://www.torontoport.com/PortAuthority/airport_tenants.asp

You probably do not want to flt into Pearson. You'd need a
reservation and have to pay an exhorbitant landing fee. Yes there is
GA in and out of there but it's mostly Lears and the like.
Buttonville Airport CYKZ is a bit further away, being in the
northeast of the city, where Pearson is in the northwest. There are
rental cars available at Buttonville, and a automated toll road that
runs across the northern part of the city and will get you close to
Pearson. A cab ride from there would probably run $60-$80 CAD.
Either City Center CYTZ or Brampton CNC3 are your closest bets. Phone
numbers for FBO's at City Centre:
Esso Aviation: 416-361-1100 Freq 123.2
Island Shell Aerocentre 416-203-2424 Freq 123.35
Customs: 1-866-226-7277 avail. 12-04Z
Flight Service: 1-866-WXBRIEF (992-7433)
FBO at Brampton:
Brampton Flying Club 416-798-7928 Freq Unicom 123.3
I don't know about rental cars or taxis from Brampton. It's a bit out
in the country so I tend to think a taxi might be a problem but you
could call them.
Taxis from downtown after taking the short ferry ride to the mainland
will run $40-$60 CAD. There are lots of hotels around Pearson to stay
at.
Enjoy your stay.

Let me through out one more idea, although city center and brampton are
closest because of traffic it can take a while to get out to the airport.
Once more option farther out, but about the same time wise, would be
Kitchener Waterloo CYKF, my suggestion for FBO would be the Waterloo
Wellington Flight Center (877) 359-9932 or 519-648-2213. They will arrange
for rental car if needed or there is a company called Airways transit (do a
google search for contact info) which will pick you up and take you to
Pearson cost about $70-75 where you could then catch an hotel shuttle.
Waterloo is towered and very GA friendly.

City Center is an incredible airport to fly into. Out on an island just
outside the city. Very little traffic as they are trying to phase it out.
I flew into Toronto (via Delta) last summer then rented a plane at City
Center to go up an around Niagara Falls. It's a flight I wont forget.

You've gotten a lot of good information, and some suggestions for other
airports, so I have just a few practical suggestions. I've gotten contact
numbers for the airports directly from the City's websites, but it's been
a while so it may be that things have changed.
I agree with the suggestions that you not plan to land at Pearson.
Depending on which side of Pearson your hotel sits, pick the GA airport
that is nearest to it. For example, if it's on the North side, you may
want to land at Buttonville.
Take your passport, and allow ample time for your interaction with
Customs. They're polite, but thorough. I've had two Customs agents "work
me over" every time. Since you are on a "business trip", expect to provide
additional explanations unless you have a Canadian work permit. If this is
a seminar or other educational meeting, it may be better to state it as
such.
For your return trip, know that U.S. Customs closes up shop pretty
promptly at 5:00, so if you are arriving after that time, that +/- 15
minute window is rather important. If your plane doesn't already have a
Customs sticker, you'll be asked to pay for one on the spot.
Have a nice trip!
Regards,
Neil
