Just be glad the City of Chicago doesn't have a towing contract for
aircraft! What a racket.

Don't forget that Giuliani says he 'admires' Daley.

Been going on for decades -

Lincoln Park Pirates

from the Steve Goodman LP
Somebody Else's Troubles

The streetlamps are on in Chicago tonight,
And lovers a'gazin' at stars;
The stores are all closin', and Daley is dozin',
And the fat man is counting the cars...

And there's more cars than places to put 'em, he says,
But I've got room for them all;
So 'round 'em up boys, 'cause I want some more toys,
In the lot by the grocery store...

Chorus;

To me, way, hey, tow them away,
The Lincoln Park Pirates are we,
From Wilmette to Gary, there's nothin' so hairy
And we always collect our fee!

So it's way, hey, tow 'em away,
We plunder the streets of your town,
Be it Edsel or Chevy, there's no car too heavy,
And no one can make us shut down.

We break into cars when we gotta,
With hammer and pickaxe and saw;
And they said this garage had no license;
But little care I for the law!
Our drivers are friendly and courteous;
Their good manners you always will get;
'Cause they all are recent graduates
Of the charm school in Joliet.

Chours;

And when all the cars are collected,
And all of their fenders are ruined,
Then I'll tow all the boats in Belmont Harbor
To the Lincoln Park Lagoon;
And when I've collected the ransom,
And sunk all the ones that won't yield;
I'll tow all the planes that are blocking the runways
At Midway, O'Hare, and Meigs Field!

To me, way, hey, tow them away,
The Lincoln Park Pirates are we,
From Wilmette to Gary, there's nothin' so hairy
And we always collect our fee!
So it's way, hey, tow 'em away,
Now citizens, gather around,
And I think it's enough, let's call his bluff,
Let's throw the bum out of town!

Brings to mind an old song, "The Lincoln Park Pirates" about Chicago's
notorious towing squads (note the reference to towing the planes from the
city's airports towards the end!)...

The Lincoln Park Pirates, by Steve Goodman

(sung in the style of old pirate sea-chants....)

The streetlamps are on in Chicago tonight,
And lovers are gazin' at stars;
The stores are all closin', and Daley is dozin',
And the fat man is counting the cars...

And there's more cars than places to put 'em, he says,
But I've got room for them all!;
So 'round 'em up boys, 'cause I want some more toys,
Hit the lot by the grocery store...

(Chorus)
Tow me, way, hey, tow them away!
The Lincoln Park Pirates are we,
From Wilmette to Gary, there's nothin' so hairy
And we always collect our fee!
So it's way, hey, tow 'em away,
We plunder the streets of your town,
Be it Edsel or Chevy, there's no car too heavy,
And no one can make us shut down.

We break into cars when we gotta,
With hammer and pickaxe and saw;
And they said this garage had no license;
But little care I for the law!
All our drivers are friendly and courteous;
Their good manners you always will get;
'Cause they all are recent graduates
Of the charm school in Joliet. [ed - refers to the prison at Joiliet,
IL]]

(chorus)

And when all the cars are collected,
And all of their fenders are ruined,
Then I'll tow all the boats in Belmont Harbor
To the Lincoln Park Lagoon;
And when I've collected the ransom,
And sunk all the ones that won't yield;
Then I'll tow all the planes that are blocking the runways
At Midway, O'Hare, and Meigs Field!

Tow me, way, hey, tow them away!
The Lincoln Park Pirates are we,
From Wilmette to Gary, there's nothin' so hairy
We always collect our fee!
So it's way, hey, tow 'em away,
Now citizens, gather around,
And I think it's enough, let's call his bluff,
Let's throw the bum out of town! ["the bum" was the first Mayor Daley,
no doubt]

interesting that they can seize and re-sale a car.. when the original title
and lien is being held by the finance company.. how do the clear the lien to
the new buyer?

perhaps a claim filed with the insurance company for theft by the city..

The loan company should be notified so they can buy the car first.

Won't work. Virtually all auto insurance policies exclude covering
loss due to an act of terrorism.

The original owner is stuck paying the loan. the cars are purchased for
$125 no matter how old or what condition they are in. My guess is they go
to the scrappers or get torn down for parts.

It's not like the car owner is completely innocent here. She had tickets
that were unpaid. She was traveling overseas so it's not like she was part
of the "poor and elderly" the press tried to slant the story toward.
While the price was a little steep if it has been going on for years she
should have known better.

Pay your tickets folks!

The bottom line is don't let a citation(ticket) go unpaid. As for the
rest of it.... Move to Wyoming. ride a horse.

I assume there is a court order in there somewhere that seizes the
title. Otherwise you could just go down and get the car from the
current "owner".

$300 worth of parking tickets is chump change if you live in a major city,
especially one like Chicago where they're a major source of revenue.

> She was traveling overseas so it's not like she was part

Traveling overseas does not imply "lives of the rich and famous." She was a
bloody missionary, probably making no more than the cost of living in
Guatemala or whatever third-world mudhole she was in.

This sort of scam is by definition going to screw poor people the worst.
Anyone who is middle or upper-class will find a way to cough up the cash to
get the car out of hock.

> While the price was a little steep if it has been going on for years she

No, the government should not be allowed to do this, period. This is such
obvious crookedness it makes me almost physically ill. Garnish her wages,
put her in jail, whatever, but taking your car and basically giving it to a
campaign contributor to auction off is ridiculous. Daley should be in jail.
