View Full Version : Dynon EFIS-D10 Any Pireps or Opinion?

I building a Zenith 601XL I'm wavering between a minimal IFR panel and a
nice VFR Cross Country panel. Setting the IFR panel aside for a moment I'm
considering a Dynon EFIS-D10 and a Garmin 196/296. My thought is that in VMC
the "panel" display on the Garmin could act as a back-up for the Dynon.

I have one. Best bang for the buck. Haven't flown it yet, just got
my airworthiness. EFIS-D10 is neither VFR nor IFR, you need the functions
it has for flying anyway. I use Garmin 300XL, with NARCO 122D/GPS/VOR/LOC/GS
for IFR NAV. If you are watching the pennies, and thinking IFR,
why not get a IFR rated panel GPS and save the grand on G 196?

How much for database updates?

If I decide to go IFR I would also add further backup for the Dynon. I
didn't mention but also in the VFR version I'd have a Nav/Com.
I guess my real questions should have been. Has anybody used the Dynon and
would you trust the "Panel" screen of the Garmin 196/296 to get you on the
ground at night VFR in case of emergency?

Go to:
http://www.matronics.com/search
& search for 'Dynon' and/or 'D10'.
Several RV-x drivers have been flying them since they were released.

The EFIS-D10 or the Garmin 300XL?
The software updates for the EFIS-D10 are free from their website.
Garmin 300XL DB is $625.00 per year directly from Jeppesen.
But I am not doing IFR yet - plan to in the future.

GigG,
I have a Garmin GPS196 in my Long-EZ and am almost finished with the
installation of a Dynon EFIS. My Long is day/VFR only; no vacuum
instruments and darn few lights. My intention is to use the EFIS to
enhance my night-flying ability (takeoff before dawn, land after dark,
etc.) and give me some sort of option if I find myself over an overcast
at the home drome or need to do a quick 180. I have enough IMC
experience to know that needle-ball-and-airspeed is an emergency
procedure for me. An attitude indicator, on the other hand, is a
different story.
I've only heard on one GPS196 owner who finds the "Panel" screen useful.
I think it's just a gimmick to sell units; I decided I'd rather have
the HSI and moving map display at all times. I'm not convinced the
Panel screen would do me any good unless I practiced with it and stayed
current (like any instrument flying). I surely don't expect to page
over to it and recover from IMC especially when a little spatial
disorientation is thrown in. OTOH, I bet I can keep the wings level and
maintain altitude for a long enough period of time to reach VMC with
reference to the attitude indicator on the EFIS :-)

Had the orginal D-10 in a Cozy. Nice unit except I couldn't get the heading
function to settle down and indicate heading accurately. Later sold the
airplane to another guy (not because of the Dynon) who likes the Dynon. He
upgraded to D-10A and bought the remote heading sensor. Says the heading is
fine now and he likes it (I did too). He's installing their engine monitor,
now.
