View Full Version : Places to go around Las Vegas

We will be in Las Vegas in February. We rented a Cessna 172 last year and
did the Hoover Dam, Lad mead, Grand Cayon thing. Where do we go this
year? Are there any good $100 (or more) hamburger destinations nearby or
other sights we should see?

Where'd you rent the plane? I'd like to do this next time I go there.

Thanks,

Fly south down the river to Bullhead City AZ (short flight) and take the
river taxi over to Laughlin Casinos for Lunch.. and one of the casinos has a
nice antique car museum..

Fly to the Airport south of Grand Canyon and go through the aircraft
museum... I'll go look up the information if you need it, I think there is
lunch on the airport somewhere

Fly over to Mojave and go through Burt Rutan's stuff.. want to see Space
Ship One and the White Knight?

Fly down to Sendona AZ, About 1+30 in an Arrow, so maybe a tad longer in a
C-172.. great airport restaurant and fantastic views of the Sedona Hills

BT

Of course.. if in early February.. I'll be in Ontario CA for the Soaring
Convention.

Check out Echo Bay (0L9). Short flight from Las Vegas, decent restaurant, and good views of the lake.

KSEZ ... (Airport is up on a mesa overlooking the city. Funky, eclectic,
aviation- saturated restaurant turns into very good & classy dining in the
evening.)

Got to be Sedona SEZ

Al,

Sunday brunch at the Furnace Creek Lodge in Death Valley is an option.
So is Bryce and Zion Canyon, as well as the Lake Powell area. Sedona
isn't very far, either. Also, lunch at Marble Canyon (L41) is good, but
that would take you to the GC again.

Zatatime,

I'll second the recommendation for West Air at VGT. A solid outfit.

I second the Sedona recommendation.

Lake Havasu
St. George (UT)
Bryce Canyon

might also be worth a visit.

What are these places requirements for renting in the Vegas area? just
proof of time in type (logbook), or a checkout, or what?

John,

have a look at the website, www.westairaviation.com, I think. Normal
checkout and some time requirements for the more complex aircraft.
Standard stuff.

A scant hour north is the Virgin River and St. George, Utah. Marvelous
scenery above and at ground level. Rental cars are cheap. Food is down town
and until you see the airport you won't really know the definition of "down
town." Check the web for latest gas prices. Last time I was there,
self-serve was two-bits a gallon cheaper than Las Vegas.
The view over the Virgin River Gorge is magnificent. Fifteen minutes
north and you are over Zion Canyon, more eye candy. Bryce is not far away,
gorgeous.
Should that sound like a Chamber of Commerce spiel, I'm based at
Inyokern(IYK) in California.

normal check out, many just hire the CFI for the trip if it's only a one day
rental... and do you have experience in high density altitude (summer),
mountain flying? and high winds.. 25G36 here today..

Echo bay. We went up there last March, and the resort sent a complimentary shuttle bus out to the
airport to pick us up. We had the "$100 breakfast", walked down the long ramp to the marina to look
around, and then returned to the Phoenix area via the Grand Canyon. It was a nice outing.

Thanx.. I'll check it out... how did you call them?? are they on the airport
frequency?
last time I was at Echo bay there was nothing but a runway.. and the cell
phone did not work

For the uninitiated.. Echo Bay, (and Temple Bar) runway slopes and have
multiple landing illusions..
like landing up hill into a setting sun with strobing effect from the
propeller
