View Full Version : Teens "bomb" high school with eggs

As bizarre as it sounds two teenagers in Gettysburg PA were arrested
Friday for risking a catastrophe and reckless endangerment for dropping
eggs on their high school. The plane belonged to his father and the
teenager is unlicensed.

I can almost remember what it was like to be a teenager and think that
life goes on forever.

Uh, the police could not read the tail number because of the fog?

Hope they had a good time, because that is the last time they will be
allowed to leave the house, watch TV, use the computer, use the telephone,
etc., -- ever.

We had a not-too-clever pilot who saved a couple of local teens from a
similar fate. They were going to drop leaflets on the local high school
football game one evening using Dad's airplane. They made the leaflets,
went to the airport, and were preparing to make the flight. A local pilot
wised up to what they were doing (and the fact that the pilot-kid had 10 or
so hours total time, none at night) and said "If you're gonna drop leaflets,
let me fly the plane so nobody gets hurt"...

So they did. Of course, the FAA was notified and put the pieces together
and suspended the license of the not-so-smart good samaritan. Knowing him
and his flying antics, his leaflet pass was probably on knife edge,
splitting both goalposts...

Sounds like he's got a bright future...as a Red Bull Air Race pilot!

I remembered the News that day, they had no clue on who it was or where
they went. I was going through the area that day. I was amazed at this
when I read the paper yesterday. What will kids think of next!

Let's hope they don't come up with dropping small rodents equipped
with homemade parachutes. It's been done.

That's no ordinary rabbit! That's the most foul, cruel and bad tempered
rodent you've ever set eyes on!!

On what basis?

I'd guess a few:

1) Busted altitude over public gathering.

2) Dropping items from the aircraft.

3) Reckless flying.

Item (1) might be the case, but it's not a given, especially if this
was pre all the 9/11 restrictions; (3) is the catch-all so I can
believe that was added to the mix; but (2) isn't against the FARs
unless you don't take care to avoid creating a hazard, and it's hard to
see how leaflets could cause such a thing. The point I'm making is that
if this happened before the public gathering rule, it could have been
carried out quite safely and within the FARs.

"During the incident, police tried to signal the plane using
flashlights."

Because I fly, I envy no one.

An even better question would be what exactly the police thought all these
blinking flashlights would mean to a pilot. And that question, of course,
assumes that the pilot would have noticed them at all. As powerful as even
the largest D-cell Maglites might be, I'm thinking they don't exactly have
the candle power of oh, say, an rotating airport beacon. And airport
beacons are sometimes pretty darn difficult to pick out amoungst all the
other lights on the ground, even when you know where to look and are making
a concerted effort to try to spot them. Some joker with a flashlight? Like
anyone is going to see that? Give me a break!

But for the sake of argument, let's assume that you are flying and you see a
flashing Maglite down below. Heck, let's say you see one and it's coming
from right next to a police car with it's red-and-blue light rack all lit up
like Christmas Eve. So you know it's the cops, and you figure they are
signaling to you. Just what are you expected to do? Pull over to the side
of the airway, come to a complete stop, set the parking break, keep your
hands in view at all times, and be ready to provide your license,
registration, and proof of insurance to Officer Friendly?
