View Full Version : C172 Plane crash Orlando, FL

January 12th 05, 09:09 PM
We have had an unfortunate plane crash here yesterday.
I Cessna 172 developed engine problems and could not make the airport (KORL)
the plane ended up coming down just a few miles NW of the intended airport.
A chopper news 6 helicopter was on scene as the pilot tried to land the
plane on a road adjacent to a golf course. At the last moment the pilot
appears to veer away from the road to avoid rear-ending a car and instead
hits a power pole.
Passenger in critical condition, pilot did not make it.
Someone has upload the news video on alt.binaries.multimedia.aviation

I watched it several times.
What I cannot figure out is why, with all the holes to choose from, he
tried to land next to the clubhouse?
It looked like he was trying to land on the entrance drive and didn't
see the poles and wires until he was 20 feet above the road, then tried
to turn right onto what little turf there was infront of the building.

It's tragic. He had it made, till the last second, but then veered to
avoid hitting that vehicle that was driving down the road he was trying to
land on.
That makes him a hero, in my book.

I agree--what was wrong with a nice, long fairway? When I'm flying around,
I always look for golf courses because they're easy to spot and offer a nice
"out" in case of emregency.

Unless it was on fire, that's about the worse possible thing they could have
done.

there were reports of fuel draining from the wing and smoke from the hot
engine, on interview they mentioned fear of possible fire..

I watch the video again and again with my fellow pilot friends. We
really don't understand why they did not elect on land on the greens
(to their right) and end up running out of choice and hit the pole. We
don't think that narrow road was a feasible choice anyway. That road
is too narrow with power lines next to it.
If you watch closely, there was a person stood in one of the greens.
Probably that was why they veered left and end up hitting the pole.
Well, too sad. It could be a great text book manuaver but end up with
what not to do. January 05 Issue of Aviation Safety Magzine has one
exactly paragraph talking about the same engine out force landing
how-to.
(see
http://www.aviationsafetymagazine.com/pub/25_1/features/7828-1.html)
If they read this article days before, they probably won't make such
fatal mistake.

Can you save it to a lower version?
My machine OS is not compatible with the latest players.
Windows Media 7 is as high as I can go.

If you watch the wires instead of the plane as it comes in, you'll see
them sag before it looks like the plane is close enough to contact
them. It looks to me as though the wires guided the plane right into
the pole.

When I look at this again, what impresses me is how survivable it actually
was. The wires just happened to guide the pole so it went through the CFI's
part of the cockpit. You can see the geometry briefly in the shot where
they are dragging someone from the plane.
It just goes to show that the outcome of a landing like this will be largely
determined in the last half second and a quick yoke movement can be the
difference between life and death. Unfortunately, in this case, the wires
were flying the plane.

Perhaps the pilot thought he could land on the road w/o any damage.
Is it just me, or does the very begining of the video show the plane
flying past the end of a runway?

That's exactly why I turned a perfectly good 172 into beer can recyclable
material. In the last two seconds of flight, I saw three kids staring at me
out of the back windshield of a Honda station wagon going, at most 30 mph up
the freeway hill. Two choices...stay in the center lane of the freeway and
possibly kill the kids or slip over into the left lane and take the wing off
on the bridge abutment. Not much choice, is there?
It is amazing how fast an airplane turns over on its back when a wing is
gone. And I could, almost twenty years later, draw those kids' faces from
memory.

It looks to me like the van pulled out in front of him from behind. Probably
not many people look up for traffic, though.

If you can wait a day or two, I'll have it on our aviation video website.
(A fellow on the groups here snatched it, saved it in slow-motion, and sent
it to me...)

Yikes, Jim -- that musta been a wild ride.
How many forced landings have you had, anyway?

At first I saw he was going to land on the road and his right wing got
into the wires. After looking at it a few times he was not over the road
and it was his left wing into the wires, I don't think he ever saw the SUV.

They were turned around looking out the back window of the moving car.
And mommy and or daddy didn't have them buckled in because....?

Dunno about the Honda, but the back seat on our Ford wagon faced to the rear.

The desire for safety stands against every great and noble enterprise.

As he said, it was over twenty years ago. Car seats are a really
recent requirement / invention. When I grew up in the 50s/60s, there
were few seatbelts. Not even required in cars until about 1964, IIRC.
And most of the time, kids romped all over the car on long trips...
even laying in the rear window deck (a popular spot :). Yes, we
should've all been killed, but we weren't :) :)

When I took the wing off of my 172, I was was fortunate enough to
have it land on its feet (for the most part). What surprised me was
how quickly it stopped flying once the spar had snapped.
The lesson I took away from that is that if you're going to hit
something, you'd better darned close to the ground when you do it.

Lets see, twenty plus years ago would be pre-1985 - a pretty long time after the 50s/60s. As they say, time flies!
Kid car seats were definitely around, but not required, back then...

The plane was definitely to the right of the wires and the left wing hit and followed the wires. It looks to me that
they overshot their intended landing area (back along the fairway) and were trying to thread the needle between the
buildings and the road, maybe looking for a clear spot in that parking lot.
